I Don't Get Neelix and Kes

So what do you guys prefer? The butt-forehead, or the spiked forehead?
I'm glad Naomi had the spikes not the butt head. They were cute. Though that may have been done as a way to limit how much makeup they would have to apply to a baby and then a young child's face

From what I remember Kes grew up at her underground colony and then her adventurous spirit caused her to go up on the planet's surface. There she was captured by the Kazon to be a slave. I believe she and Neelix met maybe once or twice, Neelix wanted to save her (which he did with Voyager's help) and then came on board.
I believe their relationship was completely platonic but they did love each other. Like Kes said in one of the episodes, or one of the books not sure which one, Ocampas mate for life and there is no jealousy. They pick a partner and that's it. But aboard Voyager, Kes broke free of the restraints Ocampas have. She had a career, well two of them actually, she had friends, her gifts grew and suddenly an Ocampan life just didn't cut it anymore.
As for Neelix, he found his own rhythm on the ship as well. His problem was that he still saw Kes as the abused girl that needed to be rescued. Only this time it wasn't from the Kazon but from the sexual advances of the various crewmen. While his jealousy seemed irrational he was right on the money when it came to Tom. Tom did have a crush on Kes and even saved his rations for a while to buy her beautiful pendant.

In any event, I tend to see them as a May/December romance. Pretty good while it lasts, but it's simply not meant to last. In the end, Neelix was tired of traveling, wanted to settle down and found a woman of his own species. Someone who viewed him like a hero and who had the same ideals and wants of life as he did, while Kes also moved on.

Had Kes not been a nubile, young woman, but with the same lifespan, would anyone have taken exception to Neelix' relationship, with her, based on her lifespan, alone? Or would they have been acceptable, with her being more cougar-like?

I have seen a lot of criticism of the relationship based on her being a "child". If she had been portrayed as actually being in her 20s maybe some people would have liked it better.

^ Relatively speaking, Kes WAS in her 20's.

In "Twisted", she celebrates her 2nd birthday. Which, by Ocampa standards, translates to about 20 years old in human terms.

Ethan Phillips says "A lot of people think Kes and Neelix relationship was platonic, but it's not true...Talaxians are actually tri sexual, which means they go three times."

I know he's joking but I still don't know how to take this, and I'm not sure I censored his comments quite enough.

Ethan Phillips was asked to participate in the Neelix Cookbook, where he wrote little "jokes" and comments and others came up with recipes. One knee-slapper was that Neelix was tri-genitaled and that's where I believe that business originated. It had nothing to do with the actual show, itself.

Yes I agree with this. In Twisted she becomes about 20 in human terms. However a lot depends on how how she appeared when they first met. We don't know for sure how long before Caretaker they met. I'm guessing it was a couple of weeks. That puts her at roughly a year and a half or about 15 in human terms in Caretaker. That's why I believe their relationship would have been better if she was more of a child when they met and he became a father figure for her

Yeah that was a joke but I don't think they were platonic. We saw them kiss and didn't one of them say I love you?

Yep. The two biggest complaints I hear about them generally are that she's good looking while Neelix looks alien and that she's basically a child.

As for if their relationship is platonic or not, in the show they have kissed and said they love each other. In a couple of the books they share quarters and when Janeway wakes Neelix up in the middle of the night, Kes is there with him. Considering the books are written by the same people that write for the show, one could argue they are kinda cannon, so... take what you wish from it.

I don't believe they are written by the same people and there not considered canon.

In Twisted they had separate quarters. That doesn't mean that they couldn't spend the night together but they were bit officially living together.

i dont get why people hate on neelix he was great kind warm hearted and people say he was like the jar jar binks of voyager
