News Jason Isaacs Joins Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Lorca

Christ, we haven't seen a frame of film from a single episode, and you're bitching about sexism? How about waiting to see how the cast is utilized first before saying crap like "Oh, another white guy"?

We've seen people "bitching" about ship shapes, Klingon looks, canon violations, music choices and more. So yeah, I don't think talking about diversity in casting is a problem while the casting process is happening. Seeing most announcements being male was a bit disheartening. But don't you think it's a wee bit overly dramatic to call one snarky comment "bitching" when it's clearly not going to make me not watch the show? :p
I mean, wow, you guys... :p

Mild criticism wrapped in a snarky comment and you lose your shit.

First, "bitching" about ship design, costumes and makeup, music and those items are on a different level than getting on a soap box about diversity in casting.

It's not overly dramatic at all when you say, "Oh, another white guy" and not expect people to get annoyed at that. You've just accused the series of being sexist and racist without one second of the series being seen.

I don't understand people getting so upset when someone points out a disparity in gender and racial representation in a show. Dismissing it out of hand without acknowledging why that matters to a lot of fans contributes to the problem, not the solution.

No, I've commented on a disheartening tendency in casting that might well be overturned in the end. Pointing out those facts isn't being dramatic.
If the casting really ends up being two-thirds male, then of course it's a really bad representation of reality and I might end up calling that aspect of the show sexist. We'll see, unlike some others here I'm not raging.

I don't see how a white British guy represents me in any way, even though I'm also of European background. I think our views on racial representation are far too simplistic.

I think if you explain things a little more, instead of one short comment, I would see your side more. But to me, I just want to see good stories told and make Star Trek viable on TV again. Even if they're "little polka-dotted people, if necessary".

That's what gets me, really. Even if you just casually mention some problem with gender or minority representation in media, people will accuse you of being so dramatic. Sometimes charged up with gendered terms like "bitching" or the classic "hysterical".

I did explain it more in other posts. ;)
And like I said it wouldn't make me not watch the show as long as the stories are good and the characters interesting. It'd just be one disheartening aspect. Sounds like a pretty reasonable attitude, doesn't it? ;)
Think we're in agreement here!

 An easy thing for people who've never lacked for positive media representation to say.

Honestly? I agree with that. And with what Emilia's sentiments are all about. But if there's something wrong and you want to work on fixing a problem, I've always felt that actual conversation about the subject and trying to actually inform people gets you a lot further in life then being butthurt.

So yeah, there definatly needs to be a lot more representation in media. But the first casting announcement for this show was that of an asian woman in a position of power. Another one was that the lead of the show was a african american woman. Amazing news!! We also got a female Klingon announced. And on the day that another women is added to a cast that is, agreed, still more male than female, a great actor is also annoucned.

And instead of a comment how it's kinda sad that the cast has been expaned by another man and that's it's sad that representation is still an issue in the 21st century, we get a snarky comment. Because that's gonna make a difference in the world. Sarcasm.

Of course! And that's how you'll view the show. We'll all view it differently, obviously. I'll be watching for how it carries on the name and style of Trek, if the stories are good and if it makes me feel like it was worth the wait.

We all look at things on different levels, and I understand your view now.

I think we agree on the basic concept then.
Can you really blame a woman for once in a while throwing in a snarky comment when stuff like this happens again and again? ;)

TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, Kelvin (2 primary Captains), DISC.

Six primary captains white males.
One primary captain black male.
One primary captain white female.

I don't think its particularly fair to give @{ Emilia } flak for her saying that she'd hoped for a more diverse casting to start evening out those numbers in a franchise that has always prized itself on attempting fair representation of humanity. It's also quite the exaggeration to claim that having Isaac's role played by a woman or a poc would have been "going all the other way" (which nobody suggested but somehow got posted here as a strawman claim) and be unfair to white men, considering the franchise history and the current film productions. Nor is the desire to see more diversity somehow an attack on men, white or otherwise.

It's one person expressing her desire to see more diversity. I don't get the knee jerk reaction.

This is a huge piece of casting, fair play.

There's a lot of assumptions in this thread that he's only now come on board, but given they've been filming for around 6 weeks or so, can we be sure Isaacs hasn't been there during that time? Apart from that one photo leak, it's been a ridiculously tight set, so you never know?

Also, since we know very little about the production schedule, it's possible that the last six weeks have been filming scenes with the Klingons and/or the Shenzhou cast, and none of the Discovery scenes have been shot yet.
