News Jason Isaacs Joins Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Lorca

Why is everybody being so defensive? :p

My point was more "hey, another guy". Give me a call when it turns out that this will not be the sixth Trek show with a predominantly male cast.

We're being defensive when all someone can muster is nothing more than a snarky comment about racism for a show that has already cast both an african american woman as its main character, an asian woman as a captain of a ship and several other women cast already. You had a point if no women or only one had been cast. Now you're just sounding petty.

Wanting women and POC represented in positions of power/authority in media isn't being petty. That does matter, especially in a show that wants to spread a message of inclusiveness and racial/gender equality. DSC definitely is doing a good job in general, but @{ Emilia } is right that this is another white male captain in Star Trek, which is to say another representation of a white man in a position of authority in media. As if we don't already have that all the time everywhere.

That said, I do think he's a great actor, and probably temporary in that role and Martin-Green will become captain sooner or later.

The show has already established, even now, that it's not going to be "Star Trek as usual", so if that's what you "want it to be", you're going to be disappointed and should therefore broaden your perceptions of what Star Trek "ought to be" or else just not watch the show period.

How has it already been established? There's been one tiny video from its production. Even when Star Trek was at its worst, they still threw in a good episode in-between the arc ones. I don't see how we can already dismiss this having almost no information about the show.

That's utter nonsense. We've had five Trek shows with predominantly male casts. It's seriously not asking too much to expect an at least equal representation in the sixth show in 20-fucking-17.

Casting a woman in the lead role doesn't mean you get to just cast most other roles with the classic "male by default" strategy. You know, like Rogue One did.

All of the things that I mentioned previously establish that the series isn't going to be Star Trek as usual because they break the formula of what "Star Trek as usual" has come to mean.

And yet about half of the show's cast of characters (both main and recurring) are women, so this kind of complaining about 'gender parity' is being done in (willful) ignorance of what's actually happening.

The official press release also mentions Mary Wiseman being cast as Cadet Tilly also on the Discovery crew, don't know why they skipped that in this article

"About half" was quite a bit less than half when I last checked.
But how about we have this conversation again when we know the full cast.

In fact it'd make a lot of sense for the cast to be predominantly female to show that the previous lopsidedness was just "random" and not representative of the ST universe.

Have you even LOOKED at the cast??
Four women have been cast already, three are on IMDB, one has was just announced today. That's already 2 more, so that is progress.
And if you want equality, going all the way to one other end of the spectrum isn't that. It's just another form of genderbias. A perfect cast would be 50/50, with men and woman devided over all ranks. Which we're already seeing a start of here, with both captain in this show NOT being the lead, one a man, the other a woman.

Get some facts straight before you post stuff like this, please.

Equality is one of the biggest issues we face in this world today, but fixing it isn't gonna happen with biased and unsupported claims.

@Emilia As of now, we have 12 main or recurring characters cast, 4 of which are women; that works out to, as I noted, about "half of the characters, main or recurring" being women.

This is so cute!
I checked, and way more than half the announced actors in various roles are male. I'm still hoping this won't be the case since obviously imdb isn't giving us the full picture right now.

Last I checked 4 out of 12 is a third. Not "half". In other words we've had twice as many male actors announced.

I'd appreciate if people who tell me to get my facts straight, started doing that themselves.

Really? You want to have an adult conversation with comments like 'This is so cute'? You want to be taken serious? How about bringing up facts again?

I never said half. I said progress. More than two. More members could be cast. If only one more woman is cast, or even none, this is still progres. Problems take time to fix, they're not gonna be solved overnight. So when there's an issue with not enough women in previous Star Trek shows, and more are being cast now, you could focus on the positive a bit more.
Yes, more would be awesome. Fantastic even. But if I can't get perfect, I'll take progres.

I said "about half".

Is this the kind of math they're teaching in school these days?

Personally, I say bring on the matriarchy.

If you want to be taken seriously, don't tell me to "get some facts straight" when the facts clearly show that I was right about the cast being predominantly male so far.
So excuse my sarcasm when I read your dismissive tone.

Oh for God's sake....
The first dismissive tone in this entire discussion was your post.
