Opinions on Michael Eddington

Also, Sisko is a hypocrite because he went postal on Eddington and a few entire planets on the basis that Eddington was a Maquis traitor, yet Sisko did not care at all when his own girlfriend turned out to be a Maquis traitor, and
He put both in jail.

Kassidy gave the Maquis minor assistance, medical supplies (really a reason to get Sisko off of DS9, but Kassidy didn't know that). Eddington betrayed the shipment plans about the replicators, facilitated their theft, fired on a fellow officer, took two starships out of the control of their lawful captains, promoted insurrection among the Maquis, I could go on...

That was heroic and ingenious though!

Also illegal and traitorous. And what exactly is heroic abo

I'd have a lot more respect for Eddington, Ro, Hudson et al. if they'd shown the same sense of honor Worf did when his loyalties were conflicted, and had the decency to formally resign their commissions before they began acting against Starfleet.

But then they'd lose access to the resources, security clearances and material needed to conduct their operations!

Kassidy got out after six months IIRC.

For the denizens of the board would you want to serve under Michael Eddington? I know I would!

The nature of Kassidy's offence was far milder and Sisko wouldn't have had a say in the charge in any case.

In answer to your question no I wouldn't. He had an unerring ability to cast himself as the tragic hero at the cost of other's lives.

On balance I wouldn't be too eager to serve under Sisko either.....

I keep changing my mind about Eddington and the Maquis but I do know if the Maquis had won and established a planetary state ala Earth, Vulcan etc the traitors would be considered heroes. History is written by the winners right? How did the good ole USA get her independence?

This is true, although the analogy is flawed. The British sought to maintain their hold over the American colonies in order to continue an expansionist policy. The Federation wishes to ceded control of certain volumes of space in order to facilitate peaceful negotiations. Thus comparing the two must take into account that behaviours of the two "colonial" powers are almost polar opposites.

The American colonies sought independence in order to self govern and stood a realistic chance of success, the Maquis initially do not seek independence at all, a better analogy would be the ongoing disputes over settlements in the Gaza strip. The idea of an independent Maquis state comes later and stands a vanishingly small chance of success. Eddington stoked this fire, not to serve the best interest of the colonists, but to sate his own ego.

By fighting in an open, recognized military conflict. Subject to the rules of engagement and civilized warfare. Which the Maquis were too chickenshit to do.
One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. Although I never understood why the colonists did not just pack up and return to their indigenous planets. Were they living in the DMZ for 100's of years? No.

The cardassians didn't abide by any sort of civilized rules of engagement, treatment of prisoners, or anything else remotely "restrained or civilized".

No, they weren't. They could have left the DMZ any time they wanted to.

This isn't colonial America, or Syria, or a Borg invasion or the Dominion War. This is people fighting over their land because they're choosing to, when they could return to Federation space at any time and (for the less radical of them, in any case) faced minimum repercussions.

Oh no, they lost their precious homes!!! Big goddamn deal, replicate a new one. Or spend the rest of your life in a holodeck. But don't precipitate a war just because of ridiculous pride.
