BATES MOTEL--Season 4 (SPOILERS)

Didn't see a threat for this yet, so . . ..

I appreciated the 30-minute "Quickie Recap" A&E ran before season premiere last night, just to refresh our memories. I had completely forgotten about one of Norman's victims from last season.

The premiere mostly served to set up the new status quo, but had some nicely creepy bits. Norman's "dog" is a disturbing indication of just removed he is from reality these days. As for Dylan and Emma . . . part of me wishes that they could just live happily ever after in Seattle, but I fear they're going to get sucked back into the madness eventually, despite their best efforts to build a new life elsewhere. Maybe when Emma finds out what really happened to her mother?

Meanwhile, we await Marion Crane . . . and her fatal shower.

Anybody else catch the season premiere last night?

I didn't, but I just finished a binge watch of the previous seasons. It's a much better show than I expected. I'll probably have to wait for the Netflix dump to catch up again.

So, will they cover the events from Psycho or will the show end five minutes before that/something similar?

It sounds like they're going to be expanding on the opening sequences of PSYCHO, building on the whole business with Marion having an secret affair, stealing the money from her employer, going on the run, meeting Norman, etc, since Marion is going to be around for several episodes--as opposed to in the movie, where she dies abruptly only an hour after meeting Norman.

In fact, it looks as though Marion is going to be having her illicit trysts with Sam at the Bates Motel, as opposed to the movie where the Bates Motel was several hours away from the city she was running from . . ...

Ugh, I din't make the connection with the cheating couple this episode, makes sense.

I didn't make the connection until I saw the "This season on BATES MOTEL teaser" and realized that the cheating husband was Sam Loomis, who has apparently acquired a wife who reminds Norma a little too much of his mother . . ...

So, yeah, it looks like they're expanding and complicating Marion's backstory from the movie. I wonder how far into the plot of PSYCHO they will get. I read an interview with the producers where they stated that this season is definitely overlapping with the movie, but that they're not necessarily treating the events of the original film as canon.

(It's hard to imagine, but I have to assume that there are some viewers of the show who haven't seen the original movie and don't know where this is going . . . .)

Sure if you PM one of the mods.

Anyway, this show is delightfully perverse. So much going on!

What will happen with paint lady?

I love the way they handled the assassin sent by Romero. The preview of their next meeting looks awesome.

Everyone does a great job with truly bizarre stuff. I would think they'd have a lot of fun making it.

Looking forward to the rest of the season. It'll be a shame to see it go.

My sister and her husband have been watching and the husband was completely shocked by the events of last season :)

Most awkward double date ever?

And Norman was having a little too much fun making Sam squirm.

Meanwhile, it looks like imaginary Norma is just as mercurial as real Norma. I half-expected her to be an idealized version of Norman's mother, but she seems to reflect all his doubts and anxieties and internal conflicts instead.

As well as, of course, his more bloodthirsty impulses.

Three.

I enjoyed last week's episode because I thought I knew what was about to happen Marion, except they turned the whole scene on its head and they killed Sam instead.

This week with a total lack of any expectations, I really thought Dylan was a goner. :o

What a great show.

I don't think they'll kill off Dylan now (I was concerned for him in this ep), it would seem overtly grimm, he's one of the few good guys left. I think Romero will be Norman's final victim or... they pull a 180° and Romero kills Norman and will be made responible for everything, not sure how that works out, but hey ;).

This, Fargo, and 13 Monkeys prove you can make a successful TV show/remake based on a movie. Bates has managed to subject my expectations at every turn.

Although, from the first episode on, I never understood why supermodels keep throwing themselves at him.

Not entirely without precedent. Look at MASH, ALICE, THE ODD COUPLE, STARGATE . . . and BUFFY.

But, yeah, FARGO and BATES both turned out great. Haven't seen 12 MONKEYS yet.

(A moment of silence, though, for DAMIEN and THE EXORCIST. :) )
