Cathexis?

Voth commando1

This is probably one of my favorite early Voyager episodes. Alien possession and paranoia dark and forboding score and atmosphere. Love the lighting effect and scenes from the aliens POV.

What is all your opinions on this one?

Probably one of the prime examples where they mishandled the Native Americanism of Chakotay's.

I'll watch it. I still find it hilarious when "Janeway" goes after "tuvok" and then they all get blasted to the ground by multi phaser blast (which we don't see again, do we?)

Riker mentions in Frame of Mind that he is setting the phaser to wide dispersal. So I think precedent exists for it.

This often winds up in Voyagers "bad" list, but I think it's great.

Favorite line:
EMH(to Neelix) "I'm not defending him, I'm just pointing out that you're acting a little paranoid.........In fact, one might say you're acting a little too paranoid."

True, but this seems to be such a useful setting of phasers that it is kind of surprising we don't see it a lot more often in use, in Voyager or in any of the other Treks, for that matter.

I like the episode, too, BTW. Kind of whodunit with a suspicious atmosphere and mood and 'paranormal' elements.

The wide beam is first used in TOS "Return of the Archons"

I like "Cathexis".

A spooky and exciting story with some unexpected turns. Good episode which is really exciting most of the time. I rank it at the 7th place among the season 1 episodes but not on my overall Voyager Top 20 list.

As for points, I give it 4 points out of 5! :bolian:

Oh, I am not questioning it's existence in trek universe but I would think it might have been more utilized in a couple of their toughest scrapes. When a phaser rifle for an example wasn't available

Leave it to Trek writers to ignore IU precedent!

Perhaps it's not practical. A few blasts probably drains the powercell completely. It could be dangerous too. Who knows.

It's like when your phone is over a year old, and you turn the brightness all the way up, because you're outside, then bam, all of the sudden your phone is about to die.

Or perhaps that one dispersed beam itself is weaker and less effective.

Interesting that this ep has its own thread as my fiancee and I watched the entire first run up until that episode. I've watched all of the shows multiple times, and Voyager is the last of them that my partner was willing to roll the dice on. Unfortunately, Cathexis may have ruined it for us. That was a weak ago, and she wanted to switch to the Americans. To be honest, I'd re-watch ANY trek episode (Manhunt, Charlie X, Spock's Brain, etc) but Cathexis was pretty bad. As a couple of people have mentioned, Chakotay's native belief's came across as a little different, and at the end of the episode, when the Dr. was able to re-integrate Chakotay's essence into his body.....well....even I laughed.

I don't get why the big takeaway from this episode is Chakotays spiritual beliefs. The whole episode is about suspicions, crewmembers getting possessed and not knowing it a moment later, finding out that there are two different forces at work, it's great. Throughout it, you think some aliens are trying to keep them away from their nebula, but find out later that the aliens want them in the their nebula to suck their souls out or take over their bodies or something, And it's Cha-KO-Tay who keeps turning the ship around to save them.
