Instead of adding onto an already 117 page thread, I've decided to start a new thread for this particular project. Not only because it features a totally different Enterprise, but it's also gonna be a tad bit different from my other projects.

This will be sort of a re-imagining, if you will, of what the Enterprise-A interiors would have looked had the production team on Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country spent a little bit more time and money to further redress the TNG sets so that they appeared to be of a ship some 70 years earlier.

But hold up! Before you go any further, this will not be a reboot of the Enterprise-A. I don't want to reinvent the sets. I'm just theorizing what the interiors would have looked, let's say, for instance, if the Enterprise-D warp core was replaced by a warp core more befitting of a late 23rd century vessel. Or if they'd painted all the doors seen in the corridors red, like we see on the bridge and galley, instead of leaving them in TNG orange.

This project will give me some room to actually be creative and using these renders for more visualization purposes of "what-ifs", which sounds kind of fun.

Also, I am going to go very much in the direction of the "worn-out Enterprise" featured in TUC. Especially when watching in blu-ray, it's apparent that the production team spent time weathering the surfaces of the interiors to give the ship an older, more seasoned look. So you will see a lot of edge damages and light grunge on the surfaces. Nothing as extreme as a Klingon interior, but just enough to convey that the ship has been knocked around and seen it's fair share of action.

Anyway, without further ado, here are some shots of the Enterprise-A corridors with red doors instead of orange.

It took me a moment to see past the fact that it wasn't screen accurate, but the more I looked at the red doors, the more I liked it. Definitely sets the corridor apart from immediately thinking "ah that's the Enterprise-D corridors."

Thoughts? Changes you'd like to see in the sets we saw on-screen?

I'd love to see you take the Enterprise-A engine room and not just replace the warp core, but maybe make it a bit more like the TMP engine room, but with TUC's aesthetics. That sounds really indecisive, I know.

I guess it also goes against "I'm not going to reinvent the sets," but you wouldn't be, not totally, since the TNG engine room is just a massive reworking of the TMP engine room.

I have some thoughts on that. However, I'd like to keep most of it as we see it toward the forward end (with the open hallway and glass-enclosed control pod.) I'd more replace the warp core and the wall directly aft of the core to make it more in line with the new "old" warp core.

They look so much better with the red doors, and your lighting really makes it look different from the TNG sets!

The black control panels on the corridors always stood out like sore thumb for me, probably because I just associate them with TNG so much.
Although I don't know what they could've done to hide them, apart from only filming the other side of the corridor that didn't have them. Maybe some 23rd Century LCARS would help, or just replace them with the same metal panels that the other walls have?

I'd put more contrast on the floor, darken the metal floor plates to be nearly black, with a very faint shine* (*if that won't kill render-times :D)
I'd also recolor the walls to have a little more of that 'yellow/gold hue' seen in TWOK, albeit that was probably due more to lighting than painting.

Overall, really love how it's coming along!

I was thinking about that last night, actually. I think I'll sprinkle in some 2290s LCARS on some of the panels, once I get some made. I don't feel like I should remove them entirely, though.

I'm continually tweaking the floor, as I'm having trouble getting it to look just right. Probably wasn't the best idea that they placed faux-metal diamond plating right next to hotel carpeting. I'll keep experimenting.
As for the gold hue in TWOK, I think I'll pass. The lighting in the TUC corridors was changed from it's straight-white TNG setting to be more of a bluish hue, so I feel like that was how the production team intended. Going gold like in TWOK would clash with the blue-grey/red scheme that seems was intended.

This is probably the most complex lighting setup I've ever done. I've tried to light it as realistically as possible, so each lighting panel/strip has it's own dedicated light object. You are seeing a lot of post-process effects as well, as far as lens flares and bloom go. I still want to add some light filtered through grates as well, like we see in the movie.

Thanks for all the feedback and ideas thus far, guys! I won't be able to satisfy everyone's ideas, but this project is really exciting me.

Donny, I am extremely excited that you are doing this thread.

We will finally see the 1701-A with the proper 1701-Refit warp-core instead of the 1701-D set.

The 1701-A Torpedo Bay was on Deck 13 in TUC and looked radically different from WOK set, but that should stay as seen in TUC, since it is not the 1701-Refit.

Yes, the torpedo bay will stay as seen in TUC, and I'm really excited to model it. Plus, I've already modeled the TWOK set, so no need to do that again (nor would I want to. That was the most exhausting set I've ever built, I think)

There's the shot of engineering when the Enterprise blasts out of Spacedock. Scotty looks like a proud papa and the fellow next to him is about to have kittens. I always figured it went like this:

Engineer: Did... Did you STEAL the Enterprise D's WARP CORE?!?
Scotty: Laddy, "steal" is such an ugly word. But doesn't she look right lovely?

Donny, extremely impressive WOK set model work that your link shows.:techman:

Will you be including the 1701-A Hangar deck from TFF?
I loved that they actually built the Hangar deck set with the two shuttlecrafts.

I have mixed feelings about that set and the interiors seen in TFF. I'll probably take those sets (hangar, brig, forward observation lounge, Jeffries Tube) and give them a HEAVY TUC treatment.

That would be great. I am just glad that you will include the 1701-A TFF sets at all. Give them the HEAVY TUC treatment. :techman: I wished that in TUC they had revisited these TFF sets to see the changes that you will now do (hangar, brig, forward observation lounge, Jeffries Tube).

Oh, I love it! I always liked the TUC interior. Nick Meyer's valves, compartments, and blinky crap didn't really fit in glued to the smooth TMP sets in the earlier movies, but worked great with the bare metal and red highlights in this version.

While we're all giving our idealized-TUC wishlists, how about the turbolift placement on the bridge? I always wondered if it would be too disruptive to the look to switch them with the two half-standing stations flanking the "MSD" in back so the lifts are back in their TMP-TVH positions.

Oh, and the big one! The officer's dining room. I pretend the TNG windows are actually the giant B/C deck lounge windows (and, if I'm really going to head-canon, that some early-24th-century captain started using the dining room for meetings in addition to meals, and that was the origin of the TNG-era Conference Lounge hybrid room), but I know some people prefer to do the "windows are just screens" thing and put it deep in the saucer because of the cross-cutting between the torpedo hit and the set exploding in the movie.

I'll most likely do two variants (what we see on screen and one with the correct turbo lift placement), which will be easy. I can just swap out the modules at will once I build the bridge.

This one's touchy, because of everything wrong. Those windows are no where to be found on the exterior model, and, of course, the torpedo hit conundrum you mentioned. I think the "the windows are just screens" is the most logical because it addresses both of those problems. However, part of me is yearning to have a nice view of the warp nacelles through the window, and pretend it it's situated where the B/C deck lounge is. Oh, what to do?

If you go with the theory that those windows are just screens, it could still be assumed that there's a camera pointing aft to generate the view for the screens. Still satisfies aesthetics and practicalities of the set!

Or you can figure out what set they would have built if they weren't going to reuse the TNG set. Still small and cramped to be sure.

I want to see a twenty year old abused arboretum. Or a more submarine rec deck.

Honestly? Just paint them red, too. Or better: color-coded panels corresponding to different decks, a la the wall colors in TMP. You could have black, red, blue, green, etc.

So, if there are at least 20 decks on the starship, there would have to be at least 20 distinct colors to correspond with them?
