True, I meant we as an audience don't have filmed opportunities to see him defined by his own character, not who he loves/hungers after at any given moment.

I wouldn't even consider it a hint. Kirk and Carol didn't seem to like each other AT ALL.
Hell, Carol had more chemistry with McCoy than she ever did with Kirk. If Carol and Bones get together, I'd believe it. But let's just say I can't see any way for there to be a nuDavid.

I don't think there are any set rules for that. I first met my a decade before we started dating. She was a co-worker and dating my best friend. I had no idea at the time we'd get involved, much less married.h, but you might say, "Maybe that's how the prime universe Kirk and Carol got together". Somehow I doubt it. May have been her first job, much as Chapel was a nurse first, then a doctor.
I know a medical doctor whose first job was cleaning, it help paid his bills. Carol was not born with her credentials.

I have no problem believing that when Kirk first meets a attractive female, he somehow manages to mention that he is a starship captain in the first sixty seconds.
Did Marcus have those credentials at the time? Or was she in fact a "lab tech?"
A lot can change over a couple of decades.

Maybe, if they're doing an internship, or if they want a reference, they might do things below their expertise to get their feet wet. Or perhaps referring to her as merely a "lab tech" was Mitchell's mistake. Or her job description was more complicated, but he shortened it in the interest of brevity.
That was interesting, since in the present day nurse and physician are completely separate career paths (nursing school coursework may not even include all the subjects that are prerequisite for acceptance into medical school). After serving as ship's nurse during the five-year mission, she changed careers significantly by going for an MD (rather than an advanced degree in nursing), and was physician in TMP.
Maybe Carol was a lab assistant before she even started her graduate coursework.
Or maybe, in three hundred years, all these jobs have vastly different scopes and educational requirements from what we are familiar with today.
