Nintendo NX / Switch Discussion

I made this post in another forum when discussing the value of the Switch and I believe it explains my position pretty well. I love the hardware of the Switch and I believe that it will be a system worth owning in time, but the value proposition of the Switch at launch is abysmal.

"It doesn't matter what the PS4 or XBO cost or included at launch. The Nintendo Switch isn't launching in 2013. The Nintendo Switch is launching in 2017 with a higher price than its competition. The PS4 and XBO are also mature consoles with a large library of older games that have been heavily discounted to allow a new gamer to build up a library. The Switch charges $50 for a tech demo and $60 for a Bomberman game. Nintendo is also going to start charging for online play that has been free for the past decade. Sony softens the blow of this cost by giving out a handful of free quality titles. Nintendo softens the blow by giving a free rental of a game that was probably released before the player was born. Oh, and you also need to buy an SD card day one for the Switch.

The lack of a pack-in title isn't an issue by itself, but it is part of a larger problem. The Nintendo Switch is more expensive than its competition and Nintendo is exacerbating the problem by price-gouging their early adopters on games, accessories, and online service. Nintendo is selling the Switch as a premium product and they lack the clout or game library to do so."

The problem with Nintendo is they simply don't get it and have always had this idea of people will buy whatever we do. Microsoft thought the same during the development of X Box One and were mistaken and Sony had this idea during the PS3, which saw them lose huge market share to the 360. MS & Sony were willing to change after that but Nintendo are probably too stubborn and too busy sucking on their own hype to do the same.

Apart from the game possibly still being in development, I wish Nintendo had Super Mario Odyssey as a launch title and release Zelda later in the year. Yes, ideally have both at launch but it is Nintendo. But Mario would have been the smarter game to launch the console given the more accessible nature of that game than that of the adventure epic. If Mario was the launch title, I would have pre-ordered for March.

When you realize that the controllers (namely the right analogue stick) is where the amiibo reader is, you kind of understand why the controllers are so expensive. That doesn't make it right though, they should have put the amiibo reader somewhere else.

Also, I was really looking forward to picking up a second Dock, I was hoping to have it hooked up to the upstairs tv so I could switch (HA) between the two tvs at will. At 90 dollars I guess I won't be doing that either. Pro Controller won't be an impulse purchase either. But I'm less bothered by that because I think I'll get by ok with both joycons and the grip.

I want to know if the Pro Controller can work in tablet mode. The joy-cons look too small in any configuration whether it be attached to the unit or joined together as one controller.

Baseless assumption alert:

I don't see why it couldn't. Not a whole lot changes when the Switch is pulled from the dock, that's why it's such a seamless transition.

Game reviewer and internet personality John "TotalBiscuit" Bain gave a nice breakdown of the details so far and what might be expected from the console:

For my part I'm not expecting to be able to get the thing in March anyway (see: NES Classic Edition, Wii U Gamecube controller adapter, the Wii U itself, etc...) so I'll most likely pick it up sometime in the summer (June birthday what up!) or even wait until Mario Odyssey is out next fall.

1 2 Switch is listed online for $50. It's outrageous that joke of a 'game' isn't bundled with the system, Nintendo thinks they can charge that much for it?

1 2 Switch should definitely be a pack-in. It's a game that gamers won't want to buy, but it's a great way to show off the system to casuals and non-gamers. It's basically free advertising for Nintendo, but instead their ego and greed got the better of them yet again.

I was hoping it'd be a pack in too, I can actually see me and my girlfriend getting some use out of it. I haven't ruled out buying it, but at 50 dollars it's asking a lot.

I'm really curious to see how it does on it's own (and I know of a few youtubers who have said they are getting it).

Try living in Canada. That $50 is $65 here and with tax it totals $73.44. We Canadian gamers tend to be very picky when it comes to paying full price for games and 1 2 Switch does not meet the bar. It's a title to buy on sale or in the used bin.

I wouldn't worry too much, with the Switch's pricing and horrible, terrible line up Nintendo should be making games on the PS5 for it's launch.

Why does every system have its own Virtual Console? If they just kept the Wii library running and accessible to the WiiU, not only could they have significantly more diverse library of games, they could have released the Switch on day 1 with VC access to make up for the lack of games being released with the console.

But, what's good for Japan is good enough for Nintendo. Can you imagine if Nintendo were American?

I'm not thrilled with the Switch's first year lineup either, but you're being way too negative. The 3DS launched with crappy games and a high price too, but Nintendo managed to turn the system into a moderate success. Check back on the Switch this time next year and I think you'll see a very appealing product.

When the 3DS came out the price was only $225-$250 and didn't start selling until it was $175-$200. Plus that was several years ago and times have changed. The Switch doesn't have the ability for the wait and see approach, that failed horrible with the Wii U and now everyone is standing around again going "Where are the games?!?!" to Nintendo as they sit on their ass and have done what for the last 1-2 years? And it's Nintendo, what's to stop them from delaying Mario? As of right now I think it's right to question Nintendo's future with hardware and that's disappointing.

All those third party games that were licensed for the Wii VC would have to likely be licensed again. Either Nintendo felt it wasn't worth the effort this time around, or the third parties didn't want to bother because the WiiU had a significantly smaller user base.

That's why on the WiiU we mostly just got 1st Party titles.
