Why can't you take a person seriously if he is wearing a strange costume? You'd make a terrible time traveler because you couldn't take any past or future person seriously until they stabbed you or blasted you with a ray gun because you weren't taking them seriously.

And Apollo, a Greek god, wouldn't be wearing a Roman toga, tha tas no tonly foreign but also more formal that the causualy everyday clothing Apollo as earing hen the Enterprise shoed up unexpectedly.

I love how the episode bookends with Kirk and Spock, who conflict over what to do with Gary Mitchell. They're in a chess match over the right course of action. Funny, considering that the episode opens with an actual chess match.

Kirk feels too much. Spock doesn't. And their worldviews collide.

The first scene sets up that conflict, where the last scene puts a button on it. In the former, Kirk ribs Spock about his human half ("...terrible having bad blood like that...") during their chess match. In the latter, Spock says he felt for Mitchell to which Kirk responds, "I believe there may be some hope for you yet, Mr. Spock."

Spock realizes he didn't kill Kirk in Amok Time. His reaction to seeing Jim alive in sickbay is priceless and showcases the depth of their friendship.

That was perhaps the only time in the series where Spock visibly showed emotion without any outside influence, and it was done perfectly.

That moment is made all the more amazing by the fact that Spock's expression changes from surprise to glee just as Shatner crosses in front of Nimoy. By the time Spock's face is visible again, he's in a full-on grin. It gives the scene a bit more surprise, and it's all the more effective for it. I don't know if that was the idea of Nimoy, Shatner, the director, or some combination of all three, but it's terrifically done.

Another cool thing about "Amok Time": the subtle contempt with which T'Pau says the word "human."
