    Who Mourns for Adonais?

The Enterprise is firing phasers at his Temple and Apollo's zapping lighting right back at it, shouting "... STOP!!! ... STOP!!! ... STOP!!!" Don't ask me why, I can't even explain it, myself, that always kind of impressed me, the drama of it. It's so over the top, it verges on comical, but it's played out deathly serious. I mean, he's in a glittering toga, with sandals and a crown of laurel leaves. How can anything he says or does ever be taken seriously? When he fires those bolts of lightning, though ... I believe. He's desperate to save himself and his panic is quite palpable. I haven't watched it in a long time, but all that with the "... STOP!!!" just ... it really gets you in the gut, there.

Some of my favorite moments in Trek have to do with Spock's "human" reactions to McCoy's cruelty / goading:

    1. The telepathic suggestion for Kirk to "forget" after McCoy's pointing out that he'll never know what Kirk went through (at the end of "Requem for Methusela")

    2. Asking Kirk to tell McCoy "he should have wished me luck" in "Immunity Syndrome" (also extra credit for "why thank you, CAPTAIN McCoy").

    3. His reaction ("really doctor?") to McCoy's pointing out why he doesn't fear death in the jail cell in "Bread and Circuses".

    4. "What would you gave me say, doctor" in "The Tholian WEb".

What I've always loved about that is the contrast between that, and Spock in the big chair, in total control, relaxed, ordering the phaser fire....

I prefer Kirk's "prop" from this episode.

"Where No Man Has Gone Before" - William Shatner's and Gary Lockwood's performances as Kirk and Mitchell. You really believe that they're old friends with a shared history. Lockwood also does a great job of making Mitchell brash but still likeable in the brief time we see him as his "normal" self. Really, we only see Mitchell's unaltered personality for less than one act!

"Errand of Mercy" - Kirk and Spock, in leg warmers, blowing up a "munitions dump" of neon corrugated cardboard boxes.

"City on the Edge of Forever" - Right at the beginning of the final scene, as Kirk and Edith Keeler are crossing the street to walk to the movie, Kirk pulls Edith away from the path of an oncoming car. Nice subtle foreshadowing of what's to come.

"Mirror, Mirror" - Mirror Sulu's facial scar. It's never referenced in any dialogue, but it gives him a cool, creepy vibe.

The round, blue projectiles used in the grenade launcher that Kirk fires at the aliens in "Arena". Love the photon torpedo sound effect made when it detonates! :techman:

I just watched that episode on BBC America. I hate to say it, but I love it when the red shirt gets disintegrated by the Gorn disruptor. :ack:

For some reason, I always loved the inside of the Jeffries Tubes. Any time they were in there, I thought it was great. That Which Survives was particularly fun.

I love everything about Arena, especially The Gorn himself who scared me witless as an eight year old back in 1972!

I always wondered about that--a disruptor, huh? Makes sense because he gets nuked before the incoming shell explodes. Yeah, life is the sh*ts as an Enterprise red shirt, isn't it? :ack: By the way, I've been watching the episodes on BBC America, too. As a Christmas present to myself I just bought the entire TOS series on Blu ray!

Yes, Spock says something about "our phasers versus their disruptors" or something to that effect.

My English friends at BBC-A have been broadcasting TOS for 24 hours, or more. Thanks, Brits!

Cool. Enjoy your Blu ray TOS. I'm going to have to break out the credit card and buy the TOS 50th Anniversary box set.:)

In Space Seed, there is a cool long scene between Khan and McGivers in the sickbay. This scene doesn't have cuts for an extended time and the uncut portion contains a variety of camera pans and moves as the couple moves from the bed to the mirror. Very artistic. The cinematography in TOS is superior to the other Trek series.

Spock and the Romulan Commander in The Enterprise Incident. I almost hoped Spock did defect and get together with her. Also, his "Vulcan Death Grip."
