Line counts and screen time are not a reflection of character development.
That's a little unfair.
Which episodes would you count as ensembles? I would count Workforce and the killing game as the two parter without a main focus each. Some of you may find this relevant. Here's a list of each character's number of personal episodes. This doesn't include pure ensembles, but there are some episodes that focus on more than one character, to which both characters get credit.
Total(all 7 seasons)
Janeway: 26
Chakotay: 15
Paris: 17
Kim: 9
B'elanna: 17
The Doctor: 20
Tuvok: 14
Neelix: 11
Kes: 7
Seven of Nine: 18
These numbers come out very similar for the DS9 cast except for Sisko and Kira who have 33 & 30. Each character gets between 2-5 episodes a season depending on their order of importance to the show.
Distant origin-would you say that's centred on the guest star or Chakotay?
let me guess..........I still like seasons 1-3 better because all the characters had lot of screen time and there was a great interaction between them.
And then of course is one more thing...............![]()
Nog? Your not being sarcastic? The Voth get quite a bit development in that one episode. I think it's a great Chakotay episode too. I like better than the one where Nog dresses up as a Kazon and kidnaps Chakotay.
"Initiations" I believe it's called. Yeah, I like the Voth episode much more, although Chakotay is pretty good in both.Nog? Your not being sarcastic?
Not entirely correct!let me guess..........
Seska!
...I knew it
Beltran wasn't happy and neither was Wang. Janeway still got enough attention that I don't think Mulgrew had reason to complain. Russ I'm not sure he played the best Vulcan since Lenard if he had complaints I don't no how public he was about it. Dawson and McNeil hmm they had their own plotline and got in directing time so I'm not sure what they felt.I wonder how much the attitude of the other actors played in the focusing on the doctor and seven.

Well said. I have no issue with them being unhappy with things that were going on behind the scenes. Everybody has things about their jobs that they don't like. But I always thought it was horrible that people would publicly bash the show, the producers, even their fellow actors, and in some cases even their fans. All actors complained at one time or another about weaknesses of scenarios but Beltran and Wang have been the most vocal in their criticism of Voyager. Worst, they directly/publicly and sometimes quite violently attacked - the excecutive producers who were Berman & Braga from S4 :
- Wang going as far as considering Berman as a racist because this latter refused to confide him the direction of some episodes while others actors from different series were offered the direction of several episodes.
- Beltran considered that Berman & especially Braga, were personally responsible of the retrogadation of his character (Chakotay) to the beneift of Seven/Ryan, the newcomer, and the EMH/Picardo.... what wasn't entirely false, I grant you that. But if both had adopted a more responsible and profesional behaviour, they would have been respected and listened by producers.
About the contracts, I learnt that, at the beginning of the adventure, all actors have signed a first contract of 3 years. Towards the end of the season 3, they all have been renewed for 2 years, except Jennifer Lien (because they needed to make room for Jeri Ryan and her character of Seven of Nine). Then a second contract of 2 years to end the series were offered, except for Philips who has asked to be freed in the beginning of S7, what producers accepted easily because well, they didn't know anymore what to do with Neelix.
So, when Beltran and Wang say that they felt trapped by their contracts, I don't think that they are totally honest. They were offered twice times, the opportunity of leaving the adventure to dedicate themselves to their supposed career but each time, they chose to stay, not only because of their contractual obligations, which forbade them to accept other commitments during the 10 months of shooting, but especially for the regular financial earnings the job brought. And as they were relegated in the background for more of the half of the season, both had more spare time to spend for their hobbies. So, at the end, it was a win win situation for them : money + spare time.
I don't say that all their all their criticisms were excessive. Some of them were fair (the balance of the first 3 seasons was sacrificed after the arrival of Seven on board and the evolution of the EMH but others, like Dawson or Philips were "victims" of this situation too. but we didn't hear them whining publicly. Same for Mulgrew about the sexualization of the series. She remained very professional though she made sure the producers know her dissatisfaction in the face of this evolution -> Berman & Braga continued to trust her and her character remained very present from s4 to the end, .while offering to the actress from s6, a little more time for her.
Is it true Beltran supposedly holds the fans in low regard? Cuz if he does then why bother going to the conventions?
I can understand if they do.Well said. I have no issue with them being unhappy with things that were going on behind the scenes. Everybody has things about their jobs that they don't like.
