Yep, the somewhat infamous variant of the early TNG uniforms where it's an option for men to wear it. It eventually just phased out in a very quiet manner as the show went on.

But really, what do we think about this type of uniform?

Me personally...It's a bit guilty pleasure yet I can totally see how it wasn't going to stick. It's a very bold type of uniform that shows how gender doesn't really matter on who wears it in this timeframe. It is a choice and nobody is there to judge on those choices which is kind of neat. As for the guilty pleasure...I am a legs man. >_>

    ...But yes, onwards.

Otherwise, the variant is...Something I just can't see going on in TNG. Once the uniforms got redesigned to something less spandex-ish, the skant was pretty much done. Not to mention compared the skirt version of the Monster Maroon uniform makes the skant seem like a downgrade in comparison.

    My opinion...Damn those legs. >_<

I never had any specific issue with the unisexual aspect of it, & as a guy, I do love me the ladies' legs, but in general it's a pretty stupid working uniform for either sex. It just made everybody look like they were going to break out into a cheerleading routine

I'm amused by the novelty of it but I think it looks silly and it would never have lasted. The dress uniform is still there to capture the legs well.

I don't like them at all, especially on the men.

But I'd take them over these annoying skin-tight things they seem to stick women in in Trek like: T'Pol, Troi (until she got into a regular uniform), 7 of 9 (with a flimsy at best excuse for it), and a few alien females.

Oh yes...I never understood the appeal of the catsuits. For all the things Jellico gets flak for (though my opinion I like the guy), I'm a hundred percent for getting Troi to wear an actual uniform all the way.

Absolutely. Once I really started paying attention to the show, I never understood why Troi was allowed to wear those things.

So, they have a uniform dress code and you can't even wear an earing (Ro), but as long as you are tyhe ship's counselor you get to wear skin-tight suits with giant cleavage ravines?

At least that skant she wore in the pilot(?) was a uniform, so I'll give the show runners that.

And the skant was a bad idea, too. It had been done away with. Starfleet officers were wearing the red uniforms from The Wrath of Khan to (as far as I know) to the new TNG era uniforms. At one point we even see they switched to the TNG communicator on the old red uniforms. And we never once saw a skant red uniform in the films. It was like a step backwards and only there because Gene wanted to see some chicks in skants.

In 1987, it looked incredibly silly on a guy. On a woman it made no difference, because we were all used to seeing that in TOS and it was no shocker. I remember being more shocked that Starfleet decided to return to the divisional colors 100 years after it went out of style.

Absolutely hate the term "skant," the article of clothing on the other hand I'm fine with.

Not a big fan of the skant uniform, although I think the 'long tunic' variant worn by Pulaski in s2, which formed the basis of the s3+ dress uniforms and the admiral's uniform from late s3 onwards wasn't bad (certainly the best of the s1/s2 styles.

I'd even take that Godawful grey and rainbow thing Wesley would wear, over the skant as well.

Riker got super strict about the uniform regulations with Ro because he saw her as a misfit, a discipline case, and a danger to the ship and crew. Once she had earned their trust, she was allowed to wear it. Nobody ever raised an eyebrow about Worf's baldric, but Worf was also a respected member of the crew.

Except for Final Frontier and Undiscovered Country where Uhura wore a skirt instead of pants.

I liked the idea behind the skant -- particularly the idea that men would wear it if so inclined. But the execution sucked, and besides which, hell would freeze over before you saw anyone but a background character wearing it. Even with as much leeway as TNG might have had by being syndicated instead of on a network, I'm sure Stewart or Frakes or any of the other male leads wearing it would have raised eyebrows in 1987.

The skant was one of the silliest uniforms I've ever seen.

Am I missing something? Maybe I'm looking at bad screen grabs or the wrong ones via Trekcore, but I don't see a skant, I see the regular red uniform on Uhura, only she's not wearing any pants with it like everybody else. If I'm wrong, I'd like to know so I can also include this in no doubt future references to shitty skants from the films, too.

You know, upon reflection, I've decided I love the skant. It's this kind of thinking that VOY and ENT needed more of: instead of putting Seven or T'Pol in normal uniforms, they should have just added some hot dudes in skintight body stockings that rendered them effectively naked as well.

So then I'm confused. Are you objecting to skirts in general (which would include what Uhura wears in the last two TOS movies) or just the uniform style where it looks like a shirt long enough to encompass both shirt and skirt (i.e. the TNG skant and the TOS miniskirt)?

Uniforms and anybody who is a Starfleet officer, in general. It looks ridiculous, it's not work functional, and I don't know any women in real life that would dress that way for a serious job. If the writers want them to come across a planet of nymphos who wear skants of various designs, go for it.

Hey, if you're a Klingon, you can apparently wear the Miss Qo'noS sash over your uniform. Riker was just being a dick about that earring thing... seriously. I'm one for hating the catsuits or casual attire on the bridge nonsense too btw

I do get the impression that this maroon number was meant to start blending in with the uniforms to some extent though

Yeah, it's not a skant. It's just Uhura switching out pants with a skirt. Even with that switch, it did not in anyway diminish the 2-6 film uniforms.

Just comparing it to the TNG Skant really made you wonder if Starfleet took 2 steps back on alternative uniform designs...Or got lazy, threw whatever looked similar to the season 1-2 basic uniforms and called it a day.
