Star Trek Anthology Films

I'm not one of those Star Trek vs. Star Wars guys. I think you can love both as they really are different from each other in many ways. It's not like comparing Pepsi and Coke; it's more like comparing Coke and rum.

But I digress... with Rogue One smashing the box office, and since studio executives seem to think Star Wars and Star Trek are essentially the same thing, I'm thinking there's an opportunity there to do a Star Trek movie not set on a ship named Enterprise. It would be interesting to see the Kelvin timeline through the eyes of a different ship and entirely new characters. It would almost be refreshing in a way.

Although, I realize this probably isn't plausible at the moment. Beyond only made like $344 million at the box office with a $185 million budget. You can make a solid point that there just isn't enough interest in a Star Trek film outside of the iconic characters and the setting of the Enterprise.

But still... if I had Q-like powers, regarding the idea of Star Trek anthology films... I'd make it so!

Just throwing that out there. I'm bored.

With the success of Rogue One, I imagine a Star Trek war movie will be done in the not too distant future. Whether or not it is an anthology is anyone's guess.

I don't have any faith in them making a good Trek movie of any description.

Rogue One was my favourite seen at the cinema this year despite my disliking The Force Awakens, so it is possible but Beyond was dire.

I'd love to see a film about Idris Elba's Franklin MACOs during the Romulan War.

I remember in between the cancellation of Enterprise and JJ Abrams' Star Trek '09, there were plans for a Romulan War movie written by Erik Jendresen. I was actually kind of interested in that idea. Maybe not so much what they pitched, but just the idea of exploring that event. That's what I had hoped Enterprise would eventually lead to. A show from the point-of-view of the MACO's would provide an interesting take.

I still think Future Guy was a future Romulan trying to change the outcome of the war!! (I'm joking - although I did initially suspect that before I realized there wasn't any actual plans for the Temporal Cold War.)

Apologies for reviving an old thread, especially my own thread, but Comic Book Resources wrote an article covering this exact topic, and I wanted to share it. This is pretty much the type of stuff I had in mind, although I think some of these would work better on TV. Asking rhetorically here, but I wonder if CBS All Access would be interested in doing a few Star Trek limited run series? Or an anthology show? Assuming of course Discovery works out (which I hoping it does.)

Here it is: http://www.cbr.com/star-trek-movies-we-need-to-see-made/

As a comic book fan, this is par for the course. As a fan of the STAR WARS franchise, I was hesitant to see if LF could pull this off, starting with "Rogue One". But for the life of me, I don't see how this can be properly done, other than focusing on a single event (like the Battle of Narendra III, which features the last stand of the Enterprise-C) or an origin story (which depicts, as the article mentioned, the life-story of Captain Picard). Epic stories that feature social change, I feel, are best served as television mini-series, like the Vulcan Civil War. Am I wrong about this? Hmmm...

There's a thread on this in Future of Trek, so I'm moving/merging.

In an ideal world, I would like really like Star Trek to be doing this. Particularly the one tackling a 22nd Century era, Birth of the Federation, Romulan War storyline. Fun to think of [insert Enterprise cast member here] turning out to be the Jimmy Smits appearance of that anthology tale.

Rum and Coke together make an excellent combination. So this calls for a ST/SW franchise crossover movie!

well with Rogue One you had certain main cast members
Leia, Vader, C-3PO and R2-D2
make cameo appearances and then you had secondary characters like bail organa, mon mothma and Captain Antilles make appearances as well, so i think you could have say Captain Archer, T'Pol, Trip and Phlox be the main cast to appear from enterprise, then have Secondary characters like Shran, Soval, Minister Samuels appear as well. Maybe even show Admiral Gardner.

and plus the Earth-Romulan War would definitely be the "Rogue One" way to go anyway. be nice to see Starfleet be gritty.

I hereby rescind the suggestion I made in my original post on this thread for Star Trek anthology films, and now advocate for a Star Trek anthology TV show - either in addition to Discovery, or to replace it if the show isn't up to par (hopefully Discovery is fantastic).

The world of Star Trek has too my opportunities to confine to just one time period. Example: tell a story set in the 23rd century in season one (like Discovery), than maybe skip ahead a century (or two!) for season two, and then jump back to the early days of the Federation in the 22nd century for season three, and so on. This way the show stays fresh as it'll literally have a new story and characters every season -but you can use some of the same actors to maintain some continuity, much like American Horror Story does (yes, I know that show is ridiculous, but the concept, I think, is perfect for Star Trek).

Of course, making new sets every year would be pretty expensive, especially for a show like Star Trek. So, I know this is wishful thinking, and I assume most people on this board probably hate the idea, but I just wanted to get it out there so I can move on. May the Schwartz be with you.

An anthology TV series would cost too much money, while an anthology movie series would be 'cheap' enough to work just like Rouge One and the next ones like it will (and did).

I don't think Star Trek anthology movies will happen because they're not doing them for Star Wars.
So far all "anthology" movies are prequels to the original trilogy, Rogue One leads right into A new Hope and the Han Solo movie is a Han Solo movie!

Just because they don't bring the casts of those movies back for sequels doesn't mean they're doing an anthology. Expanding on events depicted in the OT and its characters makes those movies part of the same narrative!

They might do a Star Trek movie with a bunch of new characters but if that becomes a huge success there WILL be a sequel. This isn't Star Wars where they have a numbered episode that's almost guaranteed to become a billion dollar movie every other year. That's what allows Lucasfilm to take a bit of a risk (but not too much so don't expect actual stand alone stories) in between.

Yep, I acknowledged that. See my quote below...

I just wanted to get the 'anthology TV series' out there so I can move on with my life. #Yolo, or whatever. (Yes, I know hashtags don't work here.)

I was just using familiar wording to convey an idea. I guess I should have used the term "spinoff movie".
