I really like this view. Maybe this was part of the motivation for Tuvok's unfinished mutiny training scenario?
In fact, if you look at cloned pets and so forth, I've never heard of an instance of this creating any kind of uncontrolled, unintended side effects of any kind. And this is using very primitive techniques. Primitive, in the sense that genes are syphoned off and manually injected into an egg, and so forth. It takes a few goes to get it right, often times. But these tools are here, now ... Today.
I think they came close to a flirtation in Perfect Son (I think that's the name) when he's in sickbay and he is so upset that it was his fault that B'Elanna got hurt, and then she called him "spot".Oh but it was and besides, Tuvok openly recognized his distrust towards Chakotay in front of the interested in the same episode... although he specified to have had the idea of this simulation a little time after the arrival of Chakotay and his friends on board.
Things being what they were, even if the hostility of departure diminished as the seasons went by, Tuvok continued to stay on his guard with ex-Maquis representants (even if he seemed to like B'Elena after a certain time) and Chakotay continued to keep his distances with the Chief of Security.
Now, back to the thread.
I think that writers could have given it a try to B'Elena & Harry Kim, even briefly like on 2 or 3 episodes, where we would have seen them openly flirted together before becoming aware that it would not work but that their friendship was more important and satisfying to them. But again, B'Elena/Tom pairing was ok for me.
How is it settling just because he's not in his 20s anymore?
I don't want to derail this thread further, this subject needs its own thread, perhaps. But cloning is an imperfect system, there's no doubt of that. It never did apply to Harry Kim, per se, but he had his DNA skewed in "Favourite Son" to encourage him to want to spend the remainder of his Earthly Existence on The Planet of Women ... and take multiple wives. The side effects were some spots on his brow and the powers of premonition, neither of which he kept after this episode. But here was a real opportunity to take Harry's chromosomes ... his genetic structure ... reshuffle them, a little, in a way that might be considered permanent and productive. These women could've made him a more Manly sort and delivered a new & improved Harry Kim for The Ages ... indeed, for the remainder of VOY's run. Alas, this was not to be ... a missed opportunity, amongst many.No unintended side-effects, but also no more similarity in attitude, personality, or even appearance between the cloned pet and the original than you would find between two from the same litter. (The fact that appearance differs tends to shock people, but fur coloration and pattern isn't genetic, it's epigenetic.)
Edit: Ah, I was wrong about that, on further research. For one, I forgot the well-known problem that cloned animals tend to have shorter lifespans due to shortened telomeres, though pet cloning usually gets around that by harvesting DNA at a young age rather than near death. But beyond that, while pet cloning hasn't really existed long enough on a broad scale to make general claims, there are signs that cloned pigs tend to have health issues not found in the originals, including a higher tendency towards respiratory diseases or high blood pressure.
I don't think there's anything wrong with Harry....but yeah sleeping with your best friend's daughter is a little weird
Also Harry and Naomi (or the rest of the crew) were replaced with a copy during Deadlock.
