Star Trek 25th Anniversary/Judgement Rites appreciation thread

Hello all,

I was going through a Star Trek games top 10 when I came across an old post of mine in which I was thinking of opening an appreciation thread for two of what I think are some of the best Star Trek games that capture the feeling of the original show.

Well here is the thread.

Those who have played the games know that they were an awesome combination of adventure gaming and a space flight sim (taking inspirations from the Wing Commander 1 and 2 space sim), during which the player control captain Kirk and the rest of the Enterprise crew through several episodes, most of them having their own independent storyline (some elements in ST25th would be recurring such as the Elasi Pirates, and in Judgment Rites the last two "episodes" made up a continuing storyline)

(as a bonus I threw in the NES Star Trek 25th Anniversary game)

The gameplay wasn't that special but it had an okay storyline that was at least worth finishing once.

I really wished that this series would get a third part, when Star Trek Secret of Vulcan Fury was announced I immediately hoped that it would be like 25th and JR. It would however later be revealed to be more like like the Myst games that were popular at the time.

Sadly other than Star Trek TNG A Final Unity there would not be another Star Trek adventure game in the style of 25th and JR.

If a new Star Trek adventure/flight sim title would be made, what would people here like to see in the game?

Well regarding the flight sim part I would really like to see it play like Star Trek Bridge Commander and that it would also include a battle simulator in which the player can fly various types of starships other than the Constitution class (other Starfleet ships as well as alien ships with their own strengths and limits) against simulated enemies.

I would also enjoy hearing from other people's experience and memories of these two/three titles.

Thank you for the thread. Its a shame more games like this can't be made (A Final Unity and Hidden Evil are similiar). They would play very well on Tablet computers.

You never know, the new VR game they're making may just be the disruptive innovation in the gaming market and could make us forget these older classics. SIgh.

Hi daedalus5, long time not spoken with you (we should catch up one of these days)

I felt like opening a thread on this subject as I was in a nostalgic mood (member berries), thinking back about what I think was the 'golden age' in Star Trek gaming.

Sadly adventure games have almost been completely forgotten with the exception of a handful of entries, and I don't think anyone will adapt this genre again for a Star Trek game (to much talking and puzzle solving).

They would play very well on Tablet computers.

That too but I think there is still a PC market as well.

Perhaps for new gamers, I doubt the VR title will make me forget about classic adventure style games.
I am not even that sold really on VR and that is not because I can not afford a VR set myself.
It is nice to see games that allow you to share the experience with other gamers in a more cooperative way but I feel storytelling is still very difficult with it other than doing basic missions in which no one is addressed directly. It is still far from an experience that can be affected by individuals' action and choices.
And sometimes there are just no people to play with.

So I think there is still quite a market for good Single Player games that don't require VR, Star Trek and others.

These games are so important as they are the last ever performances of the 7 members of the original crew together in character, but unfortunately this is largely forgotten and people just go with The Undiscovered Country (a film I adore btw)!!

Do yourself a favore, go download Munt, a Roland MT-32 emulator, and then play Star Trek with it, just fantastic sound and music wise.

I am running through Wing Commander with it, amazing music via this, just amazing.

Already doing so ;)
Back in the 90s I wondered why PC music with a soundblaster card was so inferior compared to that of an Amiga, only later did I find out that I was using the wrong sound card.

Games like Wing Commander 1/2/Privateer, Star Trek 25th/JR, Lucasarts adventures, and so many other games sound so excellent with a Roland MT-32.

I am also a fan of that movie and it is a nice send off to the original crew, but in 25th Anniversary and Judgment Rites they are at their prime, exploring space, meeting new civilizations, solving mysteries. That is how I want to remember the original crew.

Full circle?

Not quite. Two full recordings were made of Secret of Vulcan Fury, and after another rewrite everyone came in for another recording session sans Kelley (who was in ill health, and was replaced by Maurice LaMarche). The recordings have never surfaced, but they were completed.

I'm aware, obsessed and at the same time frustrated that these (hopefully) exist somewhere in the world! I'bve always called it the 'holy grail' of Star Trek I want them found and made into an animated movie :P
