True. Besides, if there is one Trek fan production worth getting "picked up" by a television network that's Star Trek Continues.

In the lap of squalor I assure you.
Picard was a lieutenant in his 60s in Tapestry.

2nd/third career, or she's not very good at her job.

If there was a big enough war, recently, a whole bunch of people would have signed up to Star Fleet from other walks of life, from all stages of life, to defend the homefront.

There is no reason a 40 year old can't get into Star Fleet Academy as a student.

    :)

Or she might just be "Hoshi 2.0"

From CBS: "We are not commenting on or confirming casting but the story that broke had inaccurate information.”

Inaccurate as in Michelle Yeoh wasn't cast for the show or inaccurate as in Yeoh wasn't cast as its lead character?

Why not? There's no upper age limit for any rank, and it is a fairly senior rank, equivalent to a major.
Star Trek fans seem to operate on a belief that you just rank up as you get older until you eventually retire an admiral. Lots of people in real life militaries, paramilitary organisations and police services spend careers in the middling ranks and we've seen that on Star Trek too. How old was Geordi when we last saw him?

When asked by reporters if the rumours were true Michelle Yeoh responded by saying that she is going to let CBS make their own announcement and commented that she is a big fan of Star Trek.

According to Deadline she will be playing Captain Han Bo of the USS Shenzhou. It appears that she will be a returning character in season one.

Okay, it makes as much sense as having a captain in his early twenties then. Anything can be justified as an exception; it's just not plausible. In the U.S. Public Health Corps or the U.S. Navy you can expect to make LCDR in 9 to 12 years. Apparently in the UK Royal Navy the average age to make CAPT is 43. In most organizations that I know of using such rank there's pressure to retire if you spend too much time in grade; they don't want people filling up those positions forever, they're in other folks' way.

On Trek I suppose you could have a 50 year-old Starfleet cadet, but it would be silly nonetheless.

And it's the same way in civilian life, too. Not everyone who goes to work for a company ends up as the CEO. Not every teacher becomes the school principal or dean of the college. Not every doctor ends up Head of Surgery. Not every reporter ends up Editor-in-Chief of a great metropolitan paper.

Heck, James Bond has been an 00 agent for decades now. You'd think he'd be promoted to M by now . . . :)

I really hope Michelle Yeoh is in the show, even if the part about her being the leas is false.

    Variety now reporting Yeoh's casting:
‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Finds First Cast Member in Michelle Yeoh

Deadline Hollywood reporting as well with additional detail about her character:

However, before you start mapping out the deck of the Discovery, sources close to the production tell us exclusively that Yeoh will actually be the leader of another ship. We hear that Yeoh has been cast as Han Bo and her ship is the Shenzhou. The Yeoh-run spacecraft is set to play a big role in Discovery‘s first season.

So Yeoh is actually playing a recurring character not aboard Discovery.

I still bet that the lead will be under 40, probably around 30. Although a Lieutenant Commander could be older, they won't cast an older woman in a role a younger woman can play, too. It is a TV show after all. They rather cast a too young actress for the role than someone 50+.

I just saw this on TrekCore, and while I would have loved to see her as the lead, this seems like a much more fitting role for her.

Yeah, I've been having similar thoughts as I dwelled on this issue more since making my earlier post.
James Doohan and DeForest Kelly were in their late forties in TOS. Simon Pegg is currently in his late forties. As I noted earlier, LeVar Burton, Brent Spiner and Michael Dorn were in their fifties in Nemesis.
