Michelle Yeoh will feature in Discovery, possibly as lead

She's the first one to sign on and they're still claiming a May 2017 launch date?

She's the first one leaked. And therefore will be first one announced if it's confirmed. And if she's the captain that makes sense. She's also possibly likely to be the biggest star name too...so again, likely to be first mentioned (unless they originally planned to announce her for last as a big reveal marketing ploy.) So...I don't think we need worry about the effect on the May launch. Truth is they only need to get x amount of episodes in the can before launch, and it won't take six months to get two or three episodes shot and turned around, especially if they go big in the pilot, standard level episode for episode 2, then bottle show for episode 3, all of which would follow a pattern of 'here's a bit of everything and some spectacle' 'here's focus on X characters and also on our set up' then 'here's focus on X characters and don't you like the inside of our new ship' which works so well in Trek and scifi shows in general. The hard part is to not look like you blew your fx budget/are saving up for the finale and treading water mid-season. This applies even in more serialised shows as well as episodic shows (even House of Cards sometimes treads water mid season, and GoT for all its spectacle and ongoing plot twists goes for front and rear heavy seasons. It's a pattern that seems ingrained in the format rather than considerations around delivery medium or even budget.)
Don't forget you can also start shooting without a full cast in place, (or in the case of Voyager, reshoot the few scenes Janeway was in when the actor is changed.) and depending how you've blocked out your production, you're gonna be in a position to shoot solo scenes from a few episodes later before a full cast is in place. And all those captains logs? You don't need any cast but the captain in the sound booth for those....even though the format probably doesn't need that level of narration anymore, it will still be part of the Trek set up. I do wonder if the opening captains narration will still be a thing given the apparent focus of the show. You don't even need costumes or sets for some of these things.

However, the basic gist of 'they better pull their fingers out and make something' is pretty true. It's like the curse of Axanar. (Their choice of time period) At the current rate, they should have just picked up Tim Russ and Renegades....they would have half a season or more in the can by now, at least as a hold over before getting Discovery going. But that depends on the quality bar they are aiming at...it's closest competitors are gonna be SyFy original shows, and on the streaming front, Discovery is going to be Netflix's answer to 'The Grand Tour' which is doing gangbusters now it's launched.

I think they'd rather do something, you know, professional and good.

Meh, they could pick up renegades and STC as a one off 'while we were gone the fans did this...Star Trek is fifty!' And paid to bring the quality on renegades up a notch.would have been interesting. It's more a tongue in cheek comment about them dragging their heels a tad anyway.

Unless they drop the full season on the first day. :)

CBS are assholes if they do not.

I don't know, I think dropping the entire season at once is hurting Marvel's Netflix shows. It prevents any sort of meaningful discussion both online and off when everyone is is at a different spot in the show. Hell I still have 2 episodes to go on Daredevil season 2. The anticipation of next weeks episode can be a good thing.

As time has gone on, I have started to come around to this. I have a limited schedule, and I can't tell you how many shows I have backed away from because I can't watch a bunch of episodes at once.

Regarding her age and rank (if she is the Lt.Cmdr), perhaps being that age in that rank is a part of her character arc? Wasn't there a quote or something from Fuller back in the summer about the character having to discover something about herself? Maybe it's something similar to Picard in Tapestry where he wasn't living up to his full potential and was lower ranked despite his age...

EDIT: Here's the quote:
It’s about this woman’s journey who in order to understand something so completely alien from her, she has to fist understand herself,” Fuller said. “That feels like it’s going right to the heart of not only what’s happening in the world, because it’s so easy to narcissistically think how we would think in [someone else’s] shoes, but it’s a complete inaccuracy. We can’t imagine how they can think. That’s part of our journey on this planet to get along and this character’s journey the first season.

She should totally be the captain. She's the right age (54) and if this show had a female captain and a female first officer ...
I wonder if having an actress of Yeoh's caliber would result in the supposed lead (the first officer) being replaced in time by Yeoh's character as the shows lead?

Like what happen with Martin Sheen and The West Wing.

I think I remember an interview where she's said she does not understand the appeal of sci-fi because the culture in Malaysia. So I'm pleasantly surprised to hear about this. She is a great actress and would be a lovely addition to Discovery, if the rumor is true.

Well, I don't think that Renegades deserved to be picked up as the next series of Star Trek franchise. To be polite, I'd say that it isn't very good.
On the other hand, it was the right time frame, with the action taking place after Voyager/Nemesis.

As for, Michelle Yeoh, if the news is officially confirmed in next days, it's a good choice for ... the role of the announced female admiral or even, the new capitain of Discovery.
As for the role of Number One, I thought that the production looked for a Black female in her 30s-40s.

I sincerely hope she's the lead -- that would be powerful in and of itself -- but yeah, it doesn't quite fly with ST's notion of Lt. Cmdr ages (Admiral Yeoh has a great ring to it). Still, even if she's not the lead, her mere presence adds a shit ton of grativas to the series.

I won't be polite - Renegades was worse than the dog crap I just scraped off my shoe.

I would be happy to see Yeoh as a Captain, less so to see her as an Admiral - it would mean less screen time.

Oh yes! That's great news!

I don't think she will be the main character, being relatively ...old... to carry a 7 year long series. Also, she's very talented and looking more into directing, so she's probably going to have other stuff to do as well.

I really hope she's going to be the Captain! Maybe she has only signed on for one or two seasons, and we will see the "main character" rise through the ranks and ultimately becomes the Captain herself. Which would be a welcoming change of pace compared to all the other Trek series where the characters and their jobs are rather...static.

Never heard of her before today. But looks like a good captain or admiral. Maybe in the vein of Commodore Paris in ST3.

I hope she gets to do some flying kung fu! Maybe as part of landing party duty....and PLEASE don't call them away teams.

Television networks don't "pick up" fan productions that they had no input in creating, and just take over their productions.
