What are your thoughts about seeing the prime universe again?

So according to you, in the case of Star Trek, TMP, TWOK, TNG… etc, were also reboots?
In some way, I would tend to feel that way. TMP, especially, which led in to TNG as well, were born out of GR's wanting to move away from TOS and craft a different vision for Star Trek.

TWOK was Nick Meyer's interpretation of his crash course in to TOS and working with eight different drafts.

I certainly have seen it argued before.

Reboot or not, and forgive me if this has already been bandied about.. I'm disappointed that it's taking place in the Prime universe. The JJVerse lends itself to a whole new realm of discovery. We can see things happen for the first time and not have to grind our teeth about how this or that is a canon violation as we did back when Enterprise was on and had to retcon certain things. Yes, the FX and standards created by the new cinematic Trek would be budgetary constraining, but I would still rather see that universe explored.

setting it far away from TNG,DS9 and voyager and before TOS is infact making the prime universe not relevant to the show. There isn't in the prime universe almost anuthing that really impact discovery. it could be in another universe that look the same so it is infact like mini reboot.

It's going to be interesting to see how the bridge is going to look like. feels like they might combine Enterprise and TOS technology.

I am late to this discussIon but I for one am happy to be back in the sandbox of the original universe! I have enjoyed the kelvin movies to some degree but they have not felt like real trek to me. I'm hoping that discovery will be good.

I am a little late to this discussion too...

I am Not sure how this will work. I mean Prime universe is 1960's technology, unless they have some excuse to go retro (like nuBSG), it won't make sense.

Discovery could also do something that the movies can reference without trapping the movies storylines.

I hope it was disinformation that it is set in prime. Otherwise...What will Sonequa's hair look like????
Also, I know the budget will be like 1969, but still...

Hey, technology changes due to all the Eugenics Wars and WW3, obviously.

I noticed on Memory Alpha that the first Reboot movie is set in 2255. Coincidence? I think not. I'm betting the Kelvin timeline and whatever repercussions it might have in the Prime timeline is going to be significant or at least come up at some point. My bet is that they are going to try and connect the new series with the movies since the movies are what most viewers are going associate Star Trek with right now. So pumped!!

Actually they wont connect the new series to the new movies in any serious way. There are to many complications for that. Look at the MCU and the MCTVU. There are to many legal issues to bring the mivies and TV shows together so they have only done it a few times. Nope Discovery will be on its own in the Prime universe.

But they can easily make the show and current movies separate...no need for much interaction I mean, they'd stil be constrained by TOS and TAS....

I don't care what timeline is used so long as it is good.

Amen.

Ultimately, the quality of the show will not be determined by the choice of timeline, but by the execution: the writing, the acting, the directing, the production values, etc.

Reboot is a misleading term in this case. The Trek Universe needs to be EXPANDED upon in a way many of us can't yet fathom. If we could, we wouldn't be debating the minutiae of uniform and ship designs as main points.

Star Trek at its core imagines a future to help us understand issues of present day life. Think about what Gene's original vision was; To tell stories that the masses couldn't or weren't ready to address head on. To lightly preach morality lessons and to display tolerance for all humanity.

Then simply dress the characters and sets in what we imagine things would be like in 300 years and you have the jumping off point for a new Star Trek universe. Rinse and repeat with the necessary adjustments every half century or so.

The rest doesn't matter in terms of our future and will always exist as part of our past as art and escape. Long live TOS, TNG, DS9....and the rest. :techman:

I think it's gonna be more like:

Prime, Except Nonrelevant Inconsistencies Sporadically

Basically the same as Prime Trek since about....episode 2 of TOS? 3? Depends on transmission or production order of course....
