Rogue One (2016) [SW Anthology Series)

Oh yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if the scene with him and Krennic in the trailer is the only scene he's in.
He's definitely in a few scenes, anyway. Just going off the trailers, he's the one Krennic is talking to about the Death Star's power being immeasurable, plus you can see his silhouette in front of a display monitor.

Oh he can be on screen for five seconds as long as he gets another limb chopped off. I just want to set the record one higher than it already is. He's lost 5 limbs over the course of the franchise and honestly I think that's hilarious.

Yeah, I remembered after I posted that that we do seem to see him in at least a couple different places throughout the trailer. Either way, I think we all agree that he's probably not going to be a big part of the movie.

Pretty sure those are both in the same room, though the one where he walks in all "I'm gonna whoop some arse" seems like it's a different set, so yeah that's probably two scenes at the very least. I'd be surprised if there's much more than that though. A little Vader goes a long way.

It's easy to forget that he didn't really do all that much in the OT either. In ANH he's basically Tarkin's henchman (as written) while in Empire & Jedi he's more of a presence than anything. Most of his scenes there either involve berating underlings or chatting with Palpatine.

Really surprised that we can't pre-order tickets yet.........anyone heard anything official about when the presale starts? I have to fly to Budapest on Dec 16th so I am really hoping to catch a midnight showing.

I've always been a little confused about Mon Mothma's name. Is Mon her first name or a title? I've always thought it sounded more like a title than a name, and I don't remember her ever being referred as anything other than Mon Mothma in books, games, ect.

Not sure if that's ever been answered. Everything I read treats it as her first name, from Legends material to TCW and novelizations, etc.

I think it's her given name, yes. At least that's the tack most sources seem to have taken over the years.

If you really think about it, Star Wars is replete with given names that sound odd to anglo-saxon ears; Mace, Biggs, Wedge, Dak, Cliegg, Bail, Cad, Boba, Lux, Han, Lando, Poe, Saw, Rey, Jyn, Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon to name but a few off the top of my head. Half of them sound like they could either be titles or nicknames.

Apparently one of the things Lucas was in the habit of doing while starting a new draft was to write out a list of such names and words, which is why so many get re-used in unexpected places down the line. Planets became surnames, forenames get switches around and so on and so forth. Since it's mostly made up it's just a matter of what sounds interesting.

I always assumed it was a title myself. Some of the ones you list sound like nicknames, but none sound near as much like a title as Mon to me, especially since she is always referred to as "Mon Mothma" as far as I can recall. Next to Princess Leia, Admiral Akbar, Darth Vader, Grand Moff Tarkin etc. it is easy to see where some of us may have made that leap to a character who clearly had significant authority.

I didn't say it was inconceivable, just not supported by any source I can recall.

I don't understand what you mean? Darth is a first name like "Ken".

(I've only seen the first Star Wars - I must get around to watching the rest...)

I suspect the only reason he's even in the trailers is because he is an iconic character.

Its called bait. Disney had to make the audience expect some connection to the Skywalker story, probably fearing a lack of interest with a story with an ending (ultimately the Death Star's use & fate) you already know.

Actually, that will be an interesting thing about the Han Solo origin movie, it likely will have nothing to do with the Skywalkers. Unless they somehow sandwich Vader into that.

I don't think Disney had to make a connection to the Skywalkers at all. Star Wars is one of the few brands out there that sells itself.

But it makes sense that Darth Vader would have some kind of connection to this story, since he's actively chasing down the recipient of the plans transmitted by Rogue One at the beginning of ANH.

They did?

I didn't know Star Wars had to be sold

Yeah, I think it would be pretty strange if they tried to tell this story without Vader being at least peripherally involved. Especially if they're determined to show events right up until about 10 mins prior ANH.

As for needing a Skywalker: well they didn't seem to bother even mentioning Luke in the TFA trailers IIRC. Conspicuously absent you might say. And even though Leia had an important role in the move, she was barely glimpsed at in the promotional material.

Before one bit of promo material was released, Disney/J.J. were not shy on letting the world know that the "big three" of the SW franchise were returning to their roles--Hamill at the top of the list. That was the shot heard around the world. With Luke, he's the face of all things Star Wars, so much that much of the pre-release fan & media talk was "what will he do?" / "when will he appear?" and anything else you can imagine. The interest in TFA relied heavily on the promise of Luke & the other two returning. Even after Han was featured in the trailers, the mass curiosity was about Luke. If that's not enough evidence, once you see the film, TFA--from the Luke-centric opening crawl (he's the first thing listed after the episode title) to arguably 50% of the film being about..finding Luke. Every major TFA character mentions Luke.

The point being that the Skywalker story is what SW is about on film, so seeing Vader (a Skywalker himself and tied to the ultimate SW hero's journey) in RO is understandable--Disney needs that all-important connection (bait), fearing that no appearance or reference will turn off a sizable number of the three generations of SW movie fans.

You know, I'm still wondering if the film will feature "Another Skywalker"-Leia-in some capacity. Jimmy Smits/Bail is in it (Although apart from the sizzle reel we haven't seen any footage or photos of him, so it's unclear how big his role is)-and we might see the plans "beamed" to her. I think we'll at least see the Tantive IV, if not a CGI'd 1977 Carrie Fisher (Something ILM seems to be getting better at-such as 80's Robert Downey Jr. in Civil War).

It will?

My dad's in to it and he hasn't even seen the trailers with Vader yet.
