Did you open the door to them, and if so, was it awkward? What did you say? I have never had a trick or treater knock on my door but I wouldnt know what to say if I didnt have anything to give them.

I've lived in many apartment complexes over the years. I never had a single trick or treater. My first Halloween on in a complex, I had a big bowl of candies. But no kids in costumes anywhere. Ever since, I never had any to give out.
As soon as I heard them coming down the hall, knocking on my neighbors' doors, I exited out of my Civilization game (it's sometimes a little noisy), made sure the living room light was off, and ignored them.
I gave out candy one year here - there were a few kids from down the hall who came - but honestly, they'd get a bigger haul if they'd just go to the local mall. That place has a "Frite Nite" thing every year where kids can dress in costume and the various stores hand out candy. They even gave me a lollipop one year and I wasn't in costume (nor was I a kid).
Of course I realize why some parents would prefer the kids go around the building here. It's secure and well-lit, and with 120 suites, they'd be sure to find some people who have candy they're willing to share.
My celebration of Halloween can be reduced to listening to The Monster Mash and watching one or two scary (or otherwise Halloween-related) movie. On my tablet, obviously, as I spend the night in the nearest (and most sincere) pumpkin patch.
Ian, Aaron and Kira went as an AT-ST, Power Ranger and a Cat. We trick or treat at the mall, safer and more comfortable. It was 35 degrees tonight and rainy.
We went trick or treating at the zoo on Saturday. Here I am with my best buddy, Ian the AT-ST.

And I thought it was a novelty when the in the store I was working in, 2 years ago, some of the staff decided to buy a box of mini wrapped chocolates and give them out to any kids that came in dressed up! A whole mall eh? Well, at least the sweets are free for once!

But what if they see my lights on? And then what if the neighbours hate me for being a candy snatcher?? And then what if the kids come back and egg my house?? WHAT THEN EH? WHAT THEN!!
Leave your lights off. Why should anyone call you a "candy snatcher" if you don't steal any candy (I presume you're an honest person and don't do that)?
I remember one Halloween, I decided I'd done enough years of giving out candy and planned to visit someone (the idea we'd had was for an evening of board games).
Turns out I needn't have worried about the kids. There was one hell of a blizzard that night and the taxi driver got lost trying to find my friend's house (he was nice enough to turn off the meter).
If anyone complains about not getting candy this year, I'll just remind them that while this is one of the "family floors" that doesn't give their kids the right to run screaming up and down the hall. And the proper way to ask for Halloween treats is to politely call "Trick or treat!" and not incessantly banging on my door.
Exactly. Isn't that what we're supposed to do? Trick or treaters are supposed to know enough to skip houses whose lights are off.

Sounds like last year for me. This year, however, it was 80+ degrees! Most people were out in shorts and t-shirts.
And I love Ian's AT-ST costume! Homemade costumes are the best ones!

Some of the local police forces here in the UK had signs that you could pin up on your door if you didn't want to be involved in Halloween, such as the one below. Useful if the resident is elderly or vulnerable.

I was giving out candy and watching Supergirl and Luke Cage. All in all a pretty quiet evening.

Turn off our houselights and sit in the dark? An elderly person could even trip over if they cant see.
^ I meant the outside lights.
Outside lights are pretty much all automatic in the UK... they only come on if movement is detected. And I'm sure that most houses dont even have outside lights.
Yeah outside lights are a rarity in the UK. They're certainly not a standard feature of a house. If you want one you add it yourself. Trick or treaters here will knock on all doors regardless of whether lights are on or off. Those signs are useful for the elderly as they can still enjoy their evening without having to sit in the dark, or worry about who's at their door.
I've observed that over the last 5 years, Halloween has become less and less of a big deal, and I think it's a sentiment that is reflected in many neighbourhoods. The last time I saw any decent numbers trick-or-treating was 5 years ago where I got at least 10-15 kids, but it's been in steady decline. Three years ago, I was lucky to even get 3 small groups. Last year we got two very small groups, then this year, one family of 3 kids. I think that halloween parties are getting more popular with more and more staying inside, and of course the whole creepy clown thing hasn't helped things this year. It's becoming less and less worth the effort.
