Jennifer Lien status

If you mean that you cannot currently render youtube, it's Matthew McConaughahey saying "The thing I love about High School Girls is that, I keep getting older, and they stay just the same... Alright, alright, alright" in the movie Dazed and Confused (1993).

There's so much about Kes that was right, at least on paper. The only spanner in the works was her age. She's beautiful, sweet, caring, magical and inquisitive. And had Neelix been cast young, the "Beauty & the Beast" theme would've been a joy to mine from. But then, there's that 10 year lifespan, again ... always ruining it all.
Yes, on paper she was an interesting character, even the short lifespan was interesting IMO

Just out of curiosity, why are you interested in getting her autograph if you clearly believe she was a lousy actress?
I have a lovely poster that has all of the characters on it, both Seven and Kes, and I would like to have all of the autographs.

I agree that the lifespan was a stupid thing. As I wrote before, a species with such short lifespan would never develope into more than primates.
But it could be dealt with. It took me 5 minutes to prolong her lifespan in a story I wrote and undo that disadvantage. And it took me only half a minute to undo the damage made to the character in "That insulting s**t episode in season 6".
If an amateur like me could do that, I expect the same from skilled writers.

Well, the endless pecking on the character and the actress might bring bad luck in this case.

What someone says about her on an online forum probably has very little to do with any future convention appearnces she may or may not make. Even before her current struggles many conventions refused to book her as a guest.

With all due respect I would imagine that you are rather biased toward your own writing. Just because you like the story doesn't mean that others will, as with all fiction.

For having such a short Life and short stay on the show, Kes left one hell of an impression.

We saw her as an egg - OK? - a FERTILISED egg!!! Fortunately, her parents love-grunts could not be heard through the womb, whilst this was going on. Although, if you turn your volume way up, you can just about make out the father saying, "... again!" And from there ... we saw Kes as a zygote ... an embryo ... ALL the way through her teens, into her Neelix and Tom years ... and then, to the very grave! So much ground has been covered.

... Kes really packs a punch!

Well, during the years I've got a lot of mails from people who appreciate my stories and my attempts to save the character from destruction. And I'm happy and grateful for that.

I don't understand the position of liking Kes' character but disliking her short lifespan. The lifespan was so central to the premise of the character and determinative of her identity, that if you change the lifespan, you end up with a different character.

It's like saying, "I love Spock, but I wish he were never logical."

Did they do much with the life span?

Before and After definitely, but more than that?

Innocence might have been a better Kes Story than Tuvok?

The premise of her character was that she was naive and innocent and open-hearted (but also easily manipulated and prone to pointless rebellion) because she was so young and inexperienced. I can think of ways to write a short-lived character without making her naive and ways to write a naive character without making her short-lived, but in Kes' case, the two went hand in hand.

What is most central for the character Kes is her personality, not the lifespan.
She is nice, friendly and beautiful but also strong.willed, determined, curious and brave. She has a way of getting her will and solving problems by simply moving and attacking the problem from another angle and can use violent methods only when it's neccessary to protect herself and her shipmates. In that wasy, she's both a contrast and a complement to more typical female action characters such as Torres, Janeway and Seven.

The lifespan was obstructive in a way. I mean, what if Voyager had become so popular that they have made several movies taking place after the homecoming. Not to mention the books and possible stories which are taking place after the ending of the series. Shouldn't Kes be in those? I found the lifespan obstructive and therefore I did away with it! Since there were hints in the series that her lifespan could be prolonged, I see nothing wrong in prolonging it. If Kes had stayed in the series, I'm sure that those in charge had come up with an idea to prolong the lifespan too.

As for ending up with a different character, no one complained when The Doctor got that holographic emitter. Now that was a major change of a character!

What I notice reading all my old stories is that I wrote them wrong.

I used to be a dummy and that dumbness really shines through.
So far, I have no problems with my own stories. I still like them.
Although I consider myself somewhat smarter now than when I wrote the first one.

OK, there are some flaws in my first story which I should re-edit but I don't have the heart to start digging in that one. All is corrected in the beginning of the second one!

My main problem is that I haven't got the time to write as much as I want. However, I do have two Kes more stories in the can, although I have problems with the ending of the first one and the other is supposed to take place after the first one so I must solve that problem. I hope to get more time for writing when spring comes.

As a person, I'm basically the same than I was when I started to post on forums like this, although more diplomatic and tolerant now than I was then. I've learned my lessons during the way.

Or, had her lifespan ended, it would be cool if they'd made a hologram of her, too, and she went on to become the most popular medical EMH ever throughout the Federation. And I think it goes without saying, an ambassadorial hologram of Neelix to send all over the galaxy and as a short order cook on every ship.

How come?
From what I've been told and read, it's that she isn't a good guest. When she is on stage she barely speaks, gives very short clipped answers and several times her Q&A sessions were cut short because nobody was asking her anything and she was just sitting there not saying anything.

In my opinion there is nothing really unique about her personality. A desire to learn and explore is common among all the characters in every series. That's why they are in Starfleet.

As for the Doctor, getting the mobile emitter didn't change his character. He was already expressing growth and development and hobbies before he got the emitter.

Also, Kes IS in the books that take place after she left. There are several books after that point that she is in.
