Series 10 News Thread (Spoilers, naturally)

I liked Battlefield, and Rememberance of the Daleks is ok, so it would be interesting to see Aaronovitch contribute to NuWho.

Survival-Munro's story-certainly has drawn some comparisons to Nuwho, specifically the RTD era, in part due to it's London suburban setting. The Master becoming more savage and less refined in "End of Time" might have been a bit of a nod too. (Although also to those stories where the Master was pretty much a walking corprse as well).

If it's Ben Aaronovitch, I would love to see a visit to the Worldsphere. Did the People survive the Time War? Would they be pissed off that the Doctor brought Gallifrey back?

Bob Baker reportedly tried to write for the new series at one point, and ocassionally still writes (He did some K-9 stuff). However, despite some memorable character intros (Omega, K-9, Eldrad etc.) I thought a lot of his WHO stuff was kind of bland.

Cartmel is another possibility. He's an active writer and I've spoken with him personally. He's been wanting to write something for the new series. He had an idea that involved a message against eating meat. When I last spoke to him a year and a half ago, he had no luck with Moffat though. But, he's a classic series writer who is still working and interested in the new series.

Cartmel did say he was suggesting Aaronovitch to Moffat too. So, it could well be Ben.

Mr Awe

Cartmel has also been writing tie-in fiction for the Who universe in the past few years. Just last year he had a short story in the Science of Doctor Who book and going back to 2009 he had a short story in the Torchwood book Consequences.

Cartmel, Aaronvitch and Hinchcliffe (story ideas only) have also worked relatively recently for Big Finish, and while it's been more than 10 years, Boucher did the Kaldor City audios and at least one Doctor Who novel.

New Cybermen?

Pretty fucking far from being any kind of surprise, but nice to hear.

Next they’ll be telling us there’ll be a Dalek or two somewhere in the season....

If so, this a fantastic redesign of their appearance, one which I haven't liked since the Tom Baker days. It does hark back nicely to the Patrick Troughton days and The Tenth Planet. Even it's a new monster, it's a lovely design.

Sadly, I doubt we'll be seeing a new Cyberman design so soon, it's only been three years since the Iron Cybermen were introduced in Nightmare in Silver and they replaced a design which had been around for seven years prior. A shame though, if that image were a Cyberman the design definitely invokes the creepiness factor of the Tenth Planet Cybermen, one time in which Classic Who's low budget worked to its advantage, IMO.

That's definitely an interesting design. I wouldn't want them to be the "primary" Cybermen design (if that makes any sense), but an appearance or two would be cool. Honestly, I'd like to see Cybermen closer to the most used Classic Who look, but with updated materials so they look a bit better. The NuWho Cybermen have always looked a bit too plastic-y and slick for me (that doesn't mean I don't like the design, but I liked the older designs a bit more).

Those might or might not be Cyber-related. The eyes look like they might be, but they seem to be wearing dungarees otherwise. They'd work as partial converts, or maybe uncompleted ones without the outer casing. Or unarmoured stay-at-homes as opposed to the usual go-out-and-fight ones.

They do have a very Quatermass II sort of air to them, IMO.

This is not a new Cyberman story. According to an alleged insider over at Gallifrey Base this will be a Genesis of the Cyberman story, so presumably a story about how the Mondas Cybermen came to be.

I wouldn't mind knowing why "our" Cybermen ended up looking like Cybusmen. There can't have been more of them from the parallel universe than there were in our own universe.

Still, a genesis story could be great, if well written.

I'm actually reminded a bit of the Voord, the bad guys from Keys of Marinus, which is kind of funny since the Sixth Doctor comic strips in Doctor Who magazine had them weaved into the origin of the Cybermen (probably because there's a slight resemblance-the handlebar helmets and the 'wetsuit' look). Perhaps we're getting a "The World Shapers" adaptation.
