Series 10 News Thread (Spoilers, naturally)

My favorite in the comments sections of Bleeding Cool:
That Mackie is actually the 13th Doctor. It's hidden in plain sight: her name is BILL. Like WILLIAM. HARTNELL.
While I like the idea for its lunacy and timey whimeyness--I really doubt that's the case. Especially since the proof is just a first name.

There were people who thought that Bilis Manger, the creepy old man from the first season of Torchwood was the first Doctor for the same reason -- "His first name is 'Bilis,' which is clearly a cryptonym for 'Bill,' which means he's William Hartnell!" Sometimes I think Who fandom needs to lay off the drugs. :)

Back in the realms of the factual, shooting on the current series won't finish until the end of next March. Which seems a long time until you add in the 2017 Christmas Special as part of it. After all, no point bringing Capaldi, sorry of couse I meant Moffat, back for one more episode months later.

Anyone else think the Bill name might have been a last minute decision based on them announcing Pearl on Shakespeare's birthday? ;) Or was that (more likely) happy coincidence?

Someone mentioned they wouldn't change Doctor and Companion at the same time so there'd be some continuity. Eleven and Amy... nuff said.

Or at least share them with the rest of the class. Not that I'm into drugs, I'm just thinking of those others in fandom who are. Because I'm just that considerate. Of course, should anything come my way, I wouldn't complain.

Yeah, but Tennant had no regular companion at the end of his run, so they didn't really have much of a choice. And truth is, in classic Who we had new companions with new Doctors all the time. IMO, companions like Ben and Polly, Tegan, Nyssa, and Adric, Peri, and Mel were all new companions when the regenerations of their respective Doctors happened.

Well, Peri was technically a new companion, wasn't she? Just two stories under Davison's Fifth, after all. I know BF changed that, since, but on-screen-wise, its still what it is.

Here's a question, is a companion a companion from their first appearance, or only once they start travelling with the Doctor? Does Peri's tenure start with Planet of Fire or Androzani?

Indeed. But also, Tegan was introduced in Tom Baker's regeneration story, making her even newer when he regenerated.

It depends on the circumstances on how a companion was introduced. For Peri, I do consider Androzani her first story as a companion as in Planet of Fire she was only a bystander brought into the story.

Mind you, my criteria was mostly based on modern Who. Of the modern day companions, I consider Rose, Martha, Donna, Amy and Clara to be companions in the episodes Rose, Smith and Jones, Partners in Crime, The Eleventh Hour and The Bells of St John. I don't consider Captain Jack to be a companion in The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, but he is a companion in all his other Doctor Who appearances. Rory doesn't get companion status until Vampires in Venice. And I'm always hesitant on whether or not to define River as a companion for any of her episodes. I do definitely count her as one in The Husbands of River Song, but the others I'm always weighing the pros and cons on.

I’m trying to work out if Tegan is kinda unique. Is she the only companion ever to witness a regeneration in her first story? As far as I can tell she is. Of course there have been companions who were with a Doctor right from the start, Harry and Amy spring to mind, but neither saw him regenerate. (edited to add: Actually Grace would kind of count, depends if you consider her a companion, and she obviously didn't witness the regeneration, but she did see the before and after Doctors)

On the companion front how would you class Adam?

Which story would you consider Nyssa's first as companion, Keeper of Traken, Logopolis or Castrovalva?

^ Logopolis. Nyssa stayed on Traken at the end of Keeper, and would've been blown up with the rest of the place without the direct intervention of 'the Watcher.' After that she's with the Doctor to stay.

Either way, Logopolis is Nyssa's second story, and she seems to know that the Doctor can change like that, even if she doesn't understand all the details. Tegan is the only one who's totally baffled by it.

Apparently Moffat has said an original series scrwriter will be contributing this season. Logically, given who's still alive and working, you're looking at the Colin/Sylv era, and means effectively Aaronovitch (well regarded books), Munro (recent awards), maybe Philip Martin, Platt or Briggs.

Or it'll turn out to mean something totally different, like they've lent a prop or something.

Chris Boucher and Philip Hinchcliffe are still alive, so it's not so unlikely to have someone from an earlier era.
