50 Days of Voyager

Day 47 – Unimatrix Zero Part 2

I have to be honest, I fell asleep during this episode. Maybe I was just tired or maybe it was boring but I dozed in and out of consciousness for the whole thing. The start did not help with 3 of Voyagers crew getting themselves assimilated to execute the plan. Really? We need 3 people? 3 senior staff members who are vital to the operation of Voyager? Seems like some unnecessary risk in this operation, but hey, its Janeway the queen of stupid risks. Then I got sleepy missed part of the episode but saw enough to see a Borg civil war starting. I probably should have liked this episode, it had all the elements of good Star Trek but in the end it put me to sleep.

More Voyager tomorrow with 7x06 Inside Man.

You aren't alone. I didn't really care for finding out that 7 had been living another life inside a dream world. I didn't like the characterization of the Borg Queen. Didn't think the plan to get intentionally infected was very believable. Didn't liek how quickly everyone recovered. Didn't like how the separated Borg were never heard from again. Didn't like...a lot of stuff. ;) haha
The Borg portrayal in Voyager as a whole is a bit disappointing. In TNG the Borg where so menacing and powerful. In Voyager they are like a nuisance more than scary. Its too bad Voyager kind of ruined the Borg to me.

Nate> Too many encounters that Janeway magically could escape as if she were a Q herself. They were reduced to a comic book villain. Her encounters should have been limited to one experience...Scorpion which she was just damn lucky to be alive today. the end. But that's just my opinion.

I think the Borg would have worked better as an off screen menace in Voyager. Seeing how other characters and cultures have dealt with their presence is more interesting than seeing the actual post First Contact iteration of the Borg to me. "Unity" is a good example of what I mean. I also think "Child's Play" would have been a better episode without the action packed Borg finale.

Day 48 – Inside man

More Barclay crap in this one. At least it was more Voyager focused and had some interesting scenes but I am not a huge fan of the alpha quadrant being in the episodes. There was a certain mystery when Voyager was cut off from the Alpha quadrant. Now with the monthly messages and the earth scenes I find Voyager loses some of its stranded feeling.

7x09 Flesh and Blood tomorrow.

Day 49 – Flesh and Blood Part 1

First off I will be going over 50 episodes (56 to be exact) and then cutting the worst 6 to make a list of 50 episodes for 50 days. So I have about a week to go before I finish with Endgame.

Now, about this episode, I noticed Brian Fuller was involved in this episode so it will be interesting to see what type of work we can expect for Star Trek Discovery. This episode is basically holograms gone wild and I like it. The story is pretty standard Trek and everything is well constructed but there are two things I really appreciate about the first half of this. 1) No major plot holes and events unfold in logical order. For Voyager that is a real accomplishment, especially managing to control manic Janeway from blowing up the story. 2) Some depth to the story and moral questions. What makes a life? Is a hologram a life or just a computer program. Ok, I know this is not the deepest or most original themes but the construction gives me hope that Star Trek Discovery might not be a huge disappointment. Or maybe my hope is clouding my judgement.

More Flesh and Blood tomorrow with 7x10 Flesh and Blood Part 2.

Day 50 – Flesh and Blood Part 2

Ok, I really should not split this up. It is more one long episode that two parts. I guess that is true of Caretaker, Dark Frontier, Flesh and Blood, and Endgame(?-haven’t seen it yet). These were intended not as two parts but as a 2 hour episode.

I really liked Flesh and Blood. BT was used very well and was really impressive in this episode. I have to agree with some of the posts a couple days ago about how she was under utilized in this show. Janeway was written in a very nobel way and was a good captain (for once) and the episode was well thought out and had good themes, dialogue, and was fun. It was funny how quickly the holograms went from reasonable to fanatics but hey, that’s Star Trek!

Nearing the end with 7x11 Shattered.

Day 51 – Shattered

Well this was basically a self-congratulating tribute episode for Voyager. Congratulations, we survived 7 years without getting cancelled! To celebrate, let’s do a time travel episode! Maybe if you watched this on first run, without PVR or downloads, it’s nice to look back on the past seven years. For me I was tired of hearing the words “temporal prime directive.” Next please.

Almost home tomorrow watching 7x15 The Void.

One might be a bit tipsy if they did a drinking game to "Temporal Prime Directive"

Void is alright. I liked the exterior FX this week and that's about it. Another void?? No objections other than the lack of creative name assignment which confuses us with the Episode "Night".

I never understood the confusion with Night. One was just an area of space that had no stars, one was an actual bubble thing in space that they got sucked into and had to escape.

I agree. Other than the fact that both had black space with no stars the episodes were very different.

Day 52 – The Void

This was a good episode and the main reason it worked is the show was able to clearly articulate who Janeway was and probably who she was supposed to be throughout the series. She is supposed to be a unwavering idealist who always follows her ideals and Starfleet principles regardless of the consequences. This episode only works because on the way her character handles the situation and the way it makes her crew and everyone around her better. This general idea about Janeway never really came through clearly with the 50 episodes of Voyager I watched and if it had it would of made the whole series more enjoyable. There were too many times she was doing something that violated Starfleet principles only for her to satisfy her own feelings. Finally with just a few episodes left I get who she is and I wish the writers would have understood her better and made her more consistent throughout the show.

Only 4 left, 7x16 Workforce 1.

I'm just wondering what times do you think she violated Starfleet principals?

poor choice of words. My point is it felt like a lack of creativity on their part. I'm nit picky that way.

And one might argue you can't refer to the void without clarifying which void you're talking about. You immediately have to go "that one where" or describe anomaly.

I always thought the void in the episode Night might have been the void between the spiral arms of the galaxy. I mean, you would think they would run into something like that eventually. Unless they were traveling straight through the middle.

I think there was an Original series novel that dealt with something like that, a lone world (it was an anomaly that it was where it was) in between the spiral arms of the galaxy. But everywhere else, it was a black sky at night with just a ribbon of light that was all the inhabitants could see of the rest of the galaxy. Does that sound familiar to anybody?

Day 53 – Workforce Part 1

This episode had a great start. It had a real 1984 fell with the happy workers. I kind of wish they would have dug a bit deeper into this and let the illusion go on a bit longer before the big reveal to as what was really happening. Besides that it was enjoyable and once again it is a B. Fuller contribution. It has solid writing and interesting ideas. Also may now that Janeway got some she won’t be such a manic captain, I guess she just needed some hanky panky to calm her nerves.

Only 3 left, 7x17 Workforce 2.

Day 54 – Workforce Part 2

I wish this two parter would have spent more time exploring this happy worker planet. It had a sort of dystopian future feel to it which could have been really cool. This two parter is ok, nothing really to point out as bad but also nothing to point out as exceptional. I liked it but I feel they missed an opportunity for something really cool. Also, poor Janeway, when she gets her memory back and realizes all the bad decisions she has made…..

Only 2 left, 7x23 Homestead.
