To be fair, he was already showing up on the timetable as one of the people providing a talk. Same for Adam Nimoy. There's also listings on the timetable for the people from Eaglemoss Publications, Disruptor Beam (Star Trek Timelines) and the Trekkie Girls.

Kitty Swink's an interesting addition though.

Adam Nimoy has been telling people for WEEKS that he was going to be there, yet Joiner's only got around to announcing him 3 days before the event. Simply unacceptable and shows a total lack of care and control. But even before the event was announced, neither Joiner or Media 10 have had any sort of handle on it.

Had no idea who Michael Moore was on the talk schedule. Most of it was shite outside of the pay talks. Even then I wouldn't pay £10 for 45 mins max. Every single thing on the Excelsior stage would be an embarrassment to a pub quiz evening. The belief that the Excelsior & Voyager stages were supposed to be provide adequate entertainment for people on day admission who expect something worthwile for their £30 entrance has turned out to be nothing more than a pipe dream.

Have no idea who the others are, apart from the Trekkie Bimbos who are nothing but self publicising fancy dress merchants who'll kiss the backside of any shyster running a sci-fi convention to get their shot at "the big time". As they showed by sucking on Mark Ambler's sausage a few years ago, they have a terrible habit of picking the wrong side. Made themselves look very stupid over that, and they were told before hand that he was clearly up to no good. And now they're sucking up to Joiner despite his history of awful behaviour. Clearly no morals at all.

Kitty Swink's only there because she's married to Armin. Hardly even rates as a guest announcement given how thin the event line up is.

I've spent the past hour just thinking.... you're. I've become one of those people :(

I don't mind the prop maker idea. Odd setting for it, but there's a rising interest in such things in todays market. I would have thought it would be more fitting at a general con with a larger amount of young attendees or more costume orientated (outwith Trek).

The only ones I don't mind is this ;cosplay judge' nonsense. Especially as there seems to be no logic in picknig judges as some are just plain rotten as designing, construction, wearing and being a person :(

Overall thought - yeah, it's been bizzarely quiet in terms of PR. I forgot this was on this weekend :/

I agree with you in theory, but I doubt you were paying £450 a night for a hotel in London, which is what every hotel around the NEC put its room prices up to as soon as Shatner decided to announce the event on twitter.
Oh God really? Even the Etap?
I love Birmingham, have been there several times, and a few months ago was briefly entertaining the idea of coming (mainly since it probably is the only opportunity to see "Shatner's World" in Europe), and I would have flown in from Germany no less. But reading through this forum at the time made me give up the idea, and I think it was the right decision. I think Fedcon was the better celebration. Not everything going smoothly there either and there are always some ruffled feathers, but in general it is a well oiled machinery. German efficiency at its best ;)

Ooooh, now you've got me interested. Do tell. At least you had Alice Eve at the last Fedcon. Or was it last year?

Still makes me laugh that in 2012 before Joiner ran DSTL, he went to Fedcon to see how it was all done. He then came back to the UK and ran an event that was a total debacle.

Jason Joiner. Ugh. That name. We come from the same town.

Joiner has been a mess for years. He's the British Alec Peters. He rests on his guests lists and sponsorships, but heavens, don't criticise the guy's events otherwise he and his cronies will shitlist you in a second. I experienced this first hand when I gave some constructive criticism on an event that I had been to (and yes, it genuinely was reasonable criticism) on their forum and it was met with insults, mockery and the deletion of my posts. When I then sent a private email to their customer services to complain about this behaviour I was ignored. This is after I had spent several hundred pounds at one of their events. To say that I was incredulous at this disgusting attitude would be an understatement. I swore never to go to one of their events again. That was 2009 and I have stuck to it, in site of wanted to see the five Captains on stage a few years ago.

It's clear that Joiner & Co see the best way to a quick buck is either a stunning guest list or a major event like this. Once they're drawn people in and got their money, the event organisation and the after care is of little concern. Terrible way to do business IMO.

Comparing Peters to Joiner is cruel. I'm not aware Peters has even 50% of Joiner's rap sheet. People will of course blame Peters for CBS bringing an end to fan productions, but that was CBS's own decision, and even the best fan stuff is unwatchable anyway. The sort of misdemeanours that Joiner's allegedly been engaging in all his adult life are on a totally different level. I did read once that when George Lucas was still in control of Lucasfilm, he spent years persuing Joiner for stolen Star Wars props.

As for Joiner resting on his guest lists, that's accurate, but if rumours are to believed, he's been having increasing difficulty getting guests. He was publicly blackballed by Micheal Biehn a few months ago, and it's common knowledge what many actors and agents think of him. The names of major stars who refuse to go near him have been doing the rounds for a while. He's clearly not been able to get major Star Trek actors for DSTE, and there will be a very big reason for that. To go from the guest lists at the 5 Captains and DST3 events to the crap he's serving up for Star Trek's 50th this weekend shows that he has very major problems. To have announced this event 8 months ago and have the whole thing look like it's been cobbled together in the last week, is a crime against the franchise and fans. I'm surprised CBS didn't relieve Media 10 of its licence and send in a hit squad, but when you see that John Van Citters has been given a free jolly to the event and a stage talk gig, you get to see the whole thing is just a cosy little web of backhanders and corruption.

My suspicion is there will be a lot of complaints about DSTE come Monday morning.

Again, I wouldn't listen too hard to the doom and gloom. I booked a hotel room today for a fraction of that amount, right next to the venue. It wasn't even hard to find.
If I am flying in from another country I can't wait till one week before with booking a room. I would die of heart failure first. I like to have my things in order, booked and planned way ahead. It gives me security to know what to expect.

So, if this convention does indeed all this last minute booking, announcing and planning, I am grateful I avoided the stress it would have caused me.

I get that the number may have been a bit exaggerated but then again I want to give the benefit of the doubt and believe he he didn't make the whole thing up entirely. It is possible there was an initial raise at the announcement and now the rates are down again.

The comparison was on the basis that both or ego driven people who wish to silence detractors by any means necessary. Not going to get into the Axanar debate as there is a whole separate thread for it.

I haven't heard about this and I would be cautious to embark on rumour speculation. I am simply relaying my own experiences at the ends of him and his minions.

You say that but he has been getting Trek stars for years, so I am not sure how true this is. The experiences I had were years ago and he still managed the previous two Trek conventions with hosts of Trek stars. You talk as if they have never been to any Joiner events before, but they have. Loads of times. Including Shatner, Avery Brooks, Scott Bakula and even Leonard Nimoy.

I think you're getting into the territory of potentially defamatory comments. Talk of "backhanders" is wildly speculative.

But that is not unusual, since his events always generate complaints. You're behaving as if this is going to be the big one that finishes him off, but I'm not so sure that's going to be the case.

Now looks like Gates won't be there on Friday as her photoshoot as just been cancelled. So that's both her and Robert Duncan McNeill.

Desperation Star Trek Europe. The event that just keeps on giving.

People already complaining on twitter about the queue to get in. Just seen a photo, and the entry queue goes for miles. And it's only Friday.
