Spoilers Star Trek: Waypoint Discussion Thread

Just came here to post this! I'm looking forward to this. IDW's anthology series (Alien Spotlight, Captain's Log) have been better than most of their other Trek work.

Is the new Enterprise here a preexisting ship class?

I love the concept of Captain LaForge and a crew of Data holograms. But if that's meant to be the Enterprise-E, IDW need a good slap.

Hard to be sure. Some of the art gaffes in the Kelvinverse ongoing were pretty embarassing, from what I remember, so whether this is the E or not could go either way!

That was pretty fun. I don't know if I'd want Capt. Geordi commanding a ship controlled by Data as a regular thing, but as a one off it seems like it'll be a lot of fun. I'm really hoping that the fact that this is supposed to cover all eras means we might finally get some more DS9, and some Voyager and Enterprise stories.

This weird alt-post-Nemesis is pretty bad, but I'll be even less interested if they come up with their own post-DS9 setup.

Well, that's kinda weird. But I'll give it a shot anyway! :)

It's not identical, but it seems to be heavily inspired by Mark Kingsnorth's Insignia Class, recently featured in the 2016 Ships of the Line calendar. (And the Insignia was in turn inspired by one of the Nova class concepts from the TNG Technical Manual.)

Doubtful. IDW doesn't have the license to DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise.

I don't think that's the case any longer. I spoke with an editor from IDW at the Star Trek: Mission New York con earlier this month, and she told me that they were looking for DS9, VOY, and ENT pitches for their new anthology title.

No spoilers but a guess - it will be an alternative universe Georgi and Data who will see via this alien machine what happened in "our" universe or will tell them (because it's from the future), the timeline is wrong.

The actual answer is more interesting...

No it's not an alternative dimension, it's simply the writer telling the story they wants to tell. It seems to just completely ignore Nemesis.

It also has

A Picard Cameo and Data 'doing a Kirk' and the first appearance of a Starfleet ship where the ship is captain
.

Shouldn't we just assume this is post-Countdown, which shows Data alive and well post Nemesis already.

They're just short stories told in the Trek universe. I'm not sure we're supposed to worry about if they "really" happened or not.

I enjoyed issue 1, so I'll definitely be checking out future issues.

Exactly. @Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore`s entry will pretty much be a modern day Gold Key comic if I'm understanding Dayton's social media comments correctly.

Modern day Gold Key Trek?

It would be precisely the thing that would make me read the comics again....

Except....

Rushed colouring, questionable artwork...
From a story perspective, someone didn't get the memo about watching Measure of a Man or Author,Author....which in part leads to crazy story jumps for the sake of the humour in the images these previews show.

And to echo the conversation about what seems to be a new enterprise, someone didn't get the memo about the CBS sanctioned odyssey class.

However, all the story points get airbrushed if it's a parallel universe or what if? Scenario, but at the same time, that lowers my interest to the point where the rushed art just finishes it off.

I have often found this to be the case with IDW comics, with very few exceptions.

I have a feeling that DC and the Marvel/Malibu years will have a hard time being unseated as the golden age for Trek comics.
