Shane Johnson (Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise)

One of the reasons why even though I have always liked the colours (other than the clocks, that should be part of the display) etc of the ST6 Bridge I have always thought of the ST5 as the better layout.
Even the ST5 lifts would have had trouble fitting in - they were spaced significantly further apart than the original TMP Bridge (which only had one console between them).
In terms of layout, I think the ST6 Bridge did it best - the doors are right where the captain can see them all the main displays are within easy swivel.

It may just be the way it's shot, but the STV bridge looks much larger than the I-III one. It doesn't have the curved walls, either so I kinda doubt it'd fit at all. I've never seen any set plans or measurements though to confirm.

I've always been quite fond of the ST V bridge. It's my second favorite movie bridge behind TMP, though the TOS set is my favorite of all :)

I agree with you there. It always seemed so... comfortable. :)

It was maybe just a shade too beige, but hey, it was the eighties!

As I understand it, the ST V bridge was the final redressed incarnation of the original Phase II / TMP set. Stored outside to clear a bit of soundstage space, it was soaked, ruined and warped by unusual stormy weather. Sadly, very little of it survived to be usable afterward.

Yes, sadly it was used at the end of TVH as the 1701-A and it was ruined, as you stated, so a new Bridge was built for TFF.
Here is how it last appeared in TVH:

I am amazed at how much of the Bridge was redressed for that quick, single shot scene. Judging by that shot of Gene & Majel, at least 2 (if not 3) unseen extra sections had the makeover treatment

I loved this new look of the TMP/WOK/SFS Bridge. I think they must have done that much redress because it was going to be used in the next film too. I wished it had survived to be used in the next films TFF and TUC too.

I like the TVH bridge quite a bit, too (that clean white look is very striking), and I would have loved for it to be used in TFF (the beige color really hurts that one, IMO). But the redress in TUC is one of my favorite Star Trek bridges of all.

It's pretty amazing that they stored it outside, though. That seems incredibly short-sighted.

It was probably more "temporarily moved" vs "stored" - and in most Southern California summers the chance of rain is like 0.0%, so they probably thought it would be OK.

I believe some of the flooring and helm parts were in good enough shape to be used afterward, but that was all. With ST VI and going forward, the bridge was a whole new creation. I doubt they had intended to leave the set components stored outside for more than a month or two, at least I would hope such was the case.

As I mentioned in my recent podcast interview, the white and chrome re-dress seen at the end of ST IV involved only the aft part of the bridge set, since only that area would be seen by the camera. The front half, looking forward from the captain's chair, was still as it had been, gray and spray-paint-burned from ST II / III. :)

Didn't they basically reuse the TMP set over and over again in TNG as the Battle Bridge and various other starships? That it was being used in TNG was kind of why they needed to do a new set for ST V and ST VI, with several TNG sets ending up being used on ST VI.

I Still like the look TMP bridge in the ST II/III configuration, though the ST IV redress panels and graphics look nice (proto-TNG).

also of note is the red carpet in the corridors, which I don't recall seeing in the first three movies, and getting to see that engineering floor painting at the completely incorrect angle. If only they had HD in the 80's!

Found the video of the segment.

Looking at these from a distance of 30 years as a person in my 40s, I can't help but think how young all of the cast looks to me.

As much as I love the look, I'm still not sure how workable a touch panel would be when the ship is being shaken by enemy fire.
