Revisiting Space: 1999...

To measure the importance of Kubrick in the making of the film you only have to compare it to its sequel (2010) made WITHOUT Kubrick's directing. It sucks.

I wouldn't say 2010 Sucks - but perhaps Kubrick wouldn't have put up with the studio interference that Hyams did.

Also the budget for 2001 in 1969 was up to $12million.

The budget for 2010 in 1984 was $28 mil

adjust for inflation and if 2001 was being made 25 years later it would have required a budget of $33.92 million.

It's also very liked at the Kubrick wouldn't have made 2001 he hadn't done it at the tail end of the 1960s and I'm doubtful it would have done as well at box office.

Kubrick never made a low budget tv series. If he had then he too would have had to lower his standards, or go over budget.
Back in '75, someone outside of the production referred to Space:1999[season one] tv series as ..."...2001:A Space Odyssey every week".

I am sorry but 34 is pretty close to 28. If you can make a masterpiece for 34, you shouldn't make a clunker for 28.

2010 is a terrific film. But not Kubrick... And bluntly, if Kubrick is the standard, we wouldn't talk about the top 100 films, we'd be rating the 100 films.

To me that's what is normally called a tribute. They have those in all major movies.
Space 1999 was pretty much 2001: The Series
  • unexplained mysterious phenomena: check
  • characters without apparent emotions: check
  • long silences: check
and....

I agree that there are a lot of similarities. But the stories were original.

2001 tells only one story. Here you have about forty different stories.

It looks similar but the stories are quite different.
Absolutely agree. Space:1999 season one has a mystery of space as does 2001. Although, as you stated, the 24 episodes of Space:1999 season one are totally different than the 2001 story.

Yes, personally I enjoyed it. Good sci.fi. shows are not easy to come by.

Obviously I did not want to imply that Space: 1999 was plagiarizing 2001: A Space Odyssey. But it is quite obvious that the latter is the greatest source of inspiration for the former, from a thematic, visual and aesthetic point of view.

There are two problems with this type of approach.

The first is that, of course, the authors of 1999 are not Kubrick. Kubrick was a genius who knew how to perfectly mix the 2001's elements thus creating a masterpiece. They didn't.

The second one is that a tv show is differente from a movie. For example, a wooden dummy can go very well as a character in a movie. You can not say the same of a television series. If you want the audience to grow fond of the characters and come back to see a new episode every week, you have to try to make sure that said characters have a personality that differs somewhat from that of a cardboard.

Really, if she occasionally didn't speak or move, you might think that she is a wax dummy.
