"Balance of Terror" is a touchstone for the Discovery story arc

If it is Romulans specifically, I hope they get rid of the idea that the two sides haven't seen each other prior to the TOS era. Lots of convoluted convenient avoidances is too restrictive when the 'loss' is a throwaway point in one episode (the racism towards Spock could have happened without this 'secret', so it was all for one reveal shot).

They could retcon Spock's reaction to "Oh my Surak, he looks like my dad!"

Exactly. He even picked up details I missed. I was the less-informed fan

Ideally, a hater should be that way, esp in a fandom that's as rabid and territorial as Trek. But all too often I encounter haters who really are in the group "Ican'torwon'twatchthatcrapbutdenigrateitanyway". They really do bring out the hater in me :brickwall:

In the Discoverse the events of Balance of Terror happen during Barry Gibb's captaincy.
Yeah, when I first saw Dennis use that term, my first thought was John Travolta! Should it be 'Discoveryverse'?

But we shouldn't have a seperate term anyway if its meant to be in the Prime timeline!;)

Personally, I have no idea what event Fuller might mean, so I'm waiting patiently to see the new series whenever I get a chance here in the UK. Anyone know when that might be?

I think this, myself. The two specific productions that have been mentioned as influences are Balance of Terror, and The Undiscovered Country. That says to me political intrigue, ships-as-submarines, and themes of enemies finding common ground. Worth noting that racism is a factor in both, as well.

They could always keep this as a secret scirmish between Romulans and the Federation. It could be something that happened behind the scenes and was never news to the general public.
From what I recall, they never really explain why the Romulans decided to attack federation outposts after 100 years. This prequel could be the events leading up that.

"Discoverse" isn't one I can claim - I was calling it the "Discovery Universe" and someone else around here came up with the neologism (one I heartily endorse and shall henceforth use liberally).

Three or four months of buying a little peace and goodwill from the rabid oldTrek hounds, before the premiere.

Some folks will be angry later, but not enough to affect the show's success.
Or maybe Fuller just wanted to use the history of that timeline to his advantage?

Who knows?

Watching Balance of Terror - I like how they could just hack into the Romulans' web cam and see their bridge. Bad command code security. :sigh:

Just payback for all the hacking the Romulans did to Starfleet during the Romulan War.

Possibly even using the programming from the War the Endeavour had encoded, pulled from the 1701 database to do it.

Agreed regarding Dennis's face to face contact comment. This is definitely the kind of continuity that they will not make the mistake to try and preserve as they did with Enterprise. The hoops they jumped through to fit continuity were done at the cost of good story.
I feel completely the opposite - the failures of Enterprise were in trying to shoehorn in things that shouldn't have been discussed, that's what caused the discontinuities (like the Borg). Had they simply stuck to their own thing, they could have filled in reams of details about that era.

Same with Discovery - how much do we really know about the ten years before TOS? A lot of events are alluded to, but do we really know the details? I want to know those details. If they take this seriously, they can allude to events we know about, and fill in the gaps while keeping the rest intact.

I think touchstone refers to the feeling of it. Balance of Terror is one of the best episodes, if he's using that as the tone of the new series, well, I'm really disappointed now that I won't be seeing it.

So much of what makes Star Trek a thing to be cherished and remembered was in that episode.

Now, if he said his touchstone was And the Children Shall Lead? .....

If that's the point of the show, or is even a sizable portion of it, I'll be checking out early.

"What do you want to do when you grow up, Johnny?"
"I want to fill in the gaps!"

"I want to tell the stories only briefly mentioned, that have the potential for in-depth character examinations and socio-political ramifications."

Why else would Fuller have chosen this era if not to explore something in the history of TOS?

"Discoverse"... :guffaw:

Space...the disco inferno. These are the voyages of the Mothership Connection Discovery. Its five-year boogie: To explore strange new dance floors. To seek out new mirrorballs and new polyester civilizations. To boldly groove where no one has grooved before!

"Captain! There is a 50-foot high hump directly in our path."
"Can we evade?"
"Negative, sir. It's so high we can't get over it and so wide we can't get around it."
"Very well. Da Bomb must be deployed immediately. We have no choice but to tear the roof off the sucker."

That sounds like a GREAT show actually! Someone needs to make it happen.

I had lost interest in ENT by early season 3, but from what I've read B&B* were out of ideas and UPN had a list of must-haves. It was basically Star Trek By The Numbers. Combine that with declining viewership, and there's no way could it succeed in that environment.

*When I say "B&B" I mean the entire production team, put together by Berman and Braga.

"Sir, the Klingon Admiral is hailing us. Shall we respond?"
"Negative. Make him wait. That's one uptight cat. Doesn't have a glide in his stride OR a dip in his hip."

Count me in!!! Disco goes hand in hand with good science-fiction!
