Ideally, a hater should be that way, esp in a fandom that's as rabid and territorial as Trek. But all too often I encounter haters who really are in the group "Ican'torwon'twatchthatcrapbutdenigrateitanyway". They really do bring out the hater in me
Yeah, when I first saw Dennis use that term, my first thought was John Travolta! Should it be 'Discoveryverse'?
But we shouldn't have a seperate term anyway if its meant to be in the Prime timeline!
Personally, I have no idea what event Fuller might mean, so I'm waiting patiently to see the new series whenever I get a chance here in the UK. Anyone know when that might be?
They could always keep this as a secret scirmish between Romulans and the Federation. It could be something that happened behind the scenes and was never news to the general public.
From what I recall, they never really explain why the Romulans decided to attack federation outposts after 100 years. This prequel could be the events leading up that.
"Discoverse" isn't one I can claim - I was calling it the "Discovery Universe" and someone else around here came up with the neologism (one I heartily endorse and shall henceforth use liberally).
Or maybe Fuller just wanted to use the history of that timeline to his advantage?

Watching Balance of Terror - I like how they could just hack into the Romulans' web cam and see their bridge. Bad command code security. 
I feel completely the opposite - the failures of Enterprise were in trying to shoehorn in things that shouldn't have been discussed, that's what caused the discontinuities (like the Borg). Had they simply stuck to their own thing, they could have filled in reams of details about that era.
Same with Discovery - how much do we really know about the ten years before TOS? A lot of events are alluded to, but do we really know the details? I want to know those details. If they take this seriously, they can allude to events we know about, and fill in the gaps while keeping the rest intact.
If that's the point of the show, or is even a sizable portion of it, I'll be checking out early.

I think touchstone refers to the feeling of it. Balance of Terror is one of the best episodes, if he's using that as the tone of the new series, well, I'm really disappointed now that I won't be seeing it.
So much of what makes Star Trek a thing to be cherished and remembered was in that episode.

As others have pointed out, all he means is that he's going for the same general tone that was found in that episode. Not that the show revolves around the episode or the Romulans or anything other than the feel and style portrayed in Balance of Terror.

Why else would Fuller have chosen this era if not to explore something in the history of TOS?

That sounds like a GREAT show actually! Someone needs to make it happen.
I had lost interest in ENT by early season 3, but from what I've read B&B* were out of ideas and UPN had a list of must-haves. It was basically Star Trek By The Numbers. Combine that with declining viewership, and there's no way could it succeed in that environment.
*When I say "B&B" I mean the entire production team, put together by Berman and Braga.
