Bujold Vs. Mulgrew

And again, I don't think that the audience wanted to see a black woman either. But he did it anyways.
He did it at the request of the network, NBC wanted minorities on the bridge! Both pilots featured exclusively white characters except for minor appearances (like George Takei who did appear in the second pilot as an unnamed science officer).
It was also Roddenberry who decided to ditch Number One, he could have kept the character, NBC liked the idea, they just didn't want Majel.
Don't give Roddenberry too much credit, he didn't care about diversity or women in major roles although he liked to pretend he did and take credit for it after the fact.

The truth seemed to be that Roddenberry's fondness for casting females had little to do with empowerment...

If Bujold is a movie actress then perhaps she could have guest starred in an episode where she had the most lines, similar to the TNG episode Too Short A Season, which guest starred a movie actress. ... Such an episode should also have similar music to that of Too Short A Season.

This....!

I personally liked the performance of Bujold which I have seen before. There is a sense of humanity there that for me is missing in Mulgrew's depiction (throughout the series). Granted this small clip is not really much to judge what Bujold would have been like for the entire series but it (to me) illustrates the difference between a film actress and a TV actress. For me it's Mulgrew's Janeway that turns me off of Voyager (a series I have watched in it's entirety 3 times) because there is a hardness about her that makes her seem like a person that I would not hang out with in real life.
I agree. Also the big advantage Mulgrew has is that her clip has been edited, Bujold's footage would benefit from the same work.

No problem with Mulgrew she did a fine job, the Janeway character on the other hand suffered from severe bouts of inane writing. Not all the time, but just often enough.

This....!
No matter what his intentions are, they are still offensive to audiences but he did it anyways. It seems when they casted Voyager they aren't focusing on the diverse cast but instead they are worried about audiences being offended by French Accents or French Names. I don't believe that Gene Roddenberry is a saint but I still prefer him compared to Berman.

Bujold obviously had no idea how American tv was made. She looks bored and tired. Mulgrew looks infinitely more comfortable and well-rounded.

I believe it was in the script that she'd look tired. So I fail to see how she was significantly worse than Mulgrew. They just had a different take on "tired".

This part never bothered me. Her portrayal of tired resembled a vulcan, or Number One. She should have rehearsed the Treknobabble. This is where she was obviously having trouble.

True. Mulgrew is selling that stuff like it really made sense to her. I think she once said something to the effect that she might as well have spoken those words in Japanese for all the sense they made to her.

Even at conventions she talks like she had no idea what was going on. The other actors remember episode names and plot points, she doesn't.

Mulgrew was competent. She was the equivalent of a female William Shatner. Alot of ham but enjoyable. Its too bad they didnt stick with Bujold or get a really great actress for the lead. Patrick Stewart and Avery Brookes really showed how much greater a Star Trek series can be when lead by someone with great acting ability.

interesting, I always thought that Avery Brooks wasn't that great of an actor.

I agree, I am not too fond of Mulgrew's (over)acting.
