I'd have to see her in something else to judge. I don't want to sound harsh on fan films, but even the best lacks a certain 'quality', so never like to use them as a comparison or baseline. Even with bringing in experienced crews, there's still too many factors and limitations that can fall into play.

Of course, I'm not rushing to see her in anything else. Or anyone, really :p I'm hoping whoever they stick in this role isn't a known quantity. The best performances I've seen in recent years have been from actors I've never heard of before.

Curious. I'll have to look back at it all. I have an unhealthy obsession with trivia stuff and West Wing was one of those shows I got to well after it finished :/

Was rewatching 633 Squadron. Squadron of World War II aircraft. The guy leading the formation was referred to as "skipper". Occurs to me that could serve as an alternative term for "captain of the ship", because "skipper" doesn't specify the exact rank.

HELL YES! That is PERFECT! C'mon, Fuller! Show us how Chang lost that eye!
Nope. No one knew that the Horta existed before "Devil in the Dark", so there's no way that one was in Starfleet. Besides, I'd imagine that most of the race had died off by the era that STD is taking place in.

Nope. I went to the panel today, and there was a dearth of new info about it. Meyer & Beyer had to do a lot of tap dancing. It seems that there's a possibility that one of the new characters might be Muslim, but that's about it. Even that's just supposition, as Beyer could neither confirm nor deny when a fan asked the question.

Captain needs to be another woman.

Balancing the sexes looks artificial and panderous..

If you take my aliens away, I am going to watch Axanar instead!!!

That said... Aliens were just other people in A Measure of a Man. Aliens were just comic relief in The City on the Edge of Forever and First Contact. They were the McGuffin in The Voyage Home. Romulans and Klingons could have been Earth factions, and Guinan could have been human in Yesterday's Enterprise. Aliens were background in Space Seed and The Wrath of Khan, and nothing but a scapegoat for Marcus in Into Darkness. You could remove the aliens from many of the great stories, and they will remain great, and remain Star Trek (with the Klingon look changes, I sometimes think we almost did that).

You can do a lot of good Star Trek without the aliens, and that's especially true in time travel stories, where humans play the role of the aliens on both sides. I want to have a lot of aliens in Discovery, I want the captain to be alien, no... I demand the captain be alien. But I wouldn't mind it that much if human-centric stories dominate. As much as I prefer we explored interesting aliens, our track record of interesting aliens actually being interesting is not that good, so I wouldn't actually notice if we didn't.

That doesn't make sense. How would the Captain of a Starfleet starship in 2255 go on to be an engineering crewman 20 years later?

After what happened to the Discovery mission? He's lucky they even let him inside a Federation starship again! If it wasn't for his admiral uncle…

A Saurian would be an excellent Captain. They are long-lived so they would have a lot of experience behind them as well as being physically very robust (with multiple hearts, considerable physical strength, able to survive in multiple atmospheres). If not the Captain, then definitely Security Chief.

Especially if the CMO was an androgynous Rhaandarite, the Science Officer was a Deltan, and the Helmsman was a Rigellian-Chelon.
