There was once a statement that the current episode plus the previous four would be available at any given time.

I don't think Netflix would pay for a show it could only show for a brief amount of time and then remove...

Reading about the on demand thing and it makes me not want to pay. Name another subscription service where they do that. None of the cable channels do that (HBO, Showtime), Netflix or Amazon Prime don't. To pay for a service which will have episodes "expire" after a certain amount of time is asinine.

I'm pretty sure that the limited episodes available only applies to US and Canada, not everywhere else where netflix has the rights for.

Amazon and Hulu do that. Sometimes only a few episodes are available at a time.

And I get why fans in NA are not happy with the decision.

There is an excellent summary here:
    https://twitter.com/TrekMovie

One of Meyer's full quotes is here:

The video itself didn’t reveal anything, the footage was from the old shows intercut with the video of the Discovery revealed in July. The only thing that was actually new was a single shot of some alien latex that looked lizard-based. We’ve been teased this way before.

At the panel in person were Nicholas Meyer and Kirsten Beyer, who both sit in the writers’ room for the new series. They also couldn’t give any specifics about the show, but both agreed that their jobs were to service Bryan Fuller’s vision for the show. Although Meyer did have one piece of advice for a fan looking for assurance that the show would be everything they hoped it would be: “Lower your expectations.” He continued, a bit later, “It is a symbiotic relationship and all I’m suggesting is that if you go with open minds and open hearts, you may be rewarded. Whereas if you go with a set of impossible to realize expectations, which even you cannot specifically define, then we’re bound to fail. And so I’m saying: Get loose.”

Being in Canada, I know I'm not pleased about it.

If they are wanting All Access to be something in the same realm as Netflix, I think they are off to a pretty rough start.

What's All Access got to do with Canada? From the Space website:

New Star Trek Series Beams Into Space January 2017
    JULY 18, 2016

    Coming January 2017

Earlier today, Bell Media announced a monumental new licensing agreement that brings the new Star Trek television series to Canada, boldly going where no Canadian company has gone before. “With Bell Media’s acquisition of the exclusive linear television and subscription video on demand (SVOD) rights in English and French in Canada, each episode of the new Star Trek series will be available simultaneously with its release in the U.S.,” the press release explained. “Bell Media has also licensed all 727 existing episodes of the Star Trek television library—which includes Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise.”

The first episode of the new series will premiere on CTV, with all subsequent episodes debuting on Space before streaming exclusively on CraveTV. Production gets underway this September in Toronto with the premiere scheduled for January.

Everything sounds great except this. Why is DSC "unbingeable"? We already knew that it's going to be released in weekly episodes. Can't someone wait and binge-watch it all at once?

It seems that CBS doesn't want that many US viewers to subscribe to All Access for only one month and then immediately cancel after binging all 13 episodes.

I was at the panel this afternoon, and while I'm glad I went, I was a bit disappointed that we didn't get a few more teasers or tidbits. I would have loved to have been given some character names, or a look at the uniforms or bridge design. I did love this quote from Nicholas Meyer, however:
I also think that Meyer had an excellent point about not letting our expectations get too sky-high and to keep an open mind.

One intriguing moment came near the end. During the Q&A portion, one fan noted that since the 60s show featured a Russian in a prominent role, it might be appropriate to have a Muslim character on the show. Kirsten Beyer said that she couldn't comment on that, leading someone in the audience to comment (loudly enough for most of the audience to hear), "That's a yes."

Meyer's comment on lowering expectations is something fans of many shows/movies/books/comics should do. They have this nearly unachievable version of what they love to see in future versions of their fandoms, and when that doesn't happen, they get disapointed and/or angry.

I think this would be awesome and keeping very much in tone with the original series.

Please No! Trek tended to avoid modern religion. Aliens had it but Earth-based religion was not in it as far as I can recall. I took it to imply that it was largely a post-religion society which is what we should expect some 250 years from now. Including someone with middle eastern roots is fine, but including a practicing muslim, that is insane.

I googled it and apparently Gene was an atheist and his vision clearly had a future with no human religion. None of the Abrahamic religions could even cope with the idea of sentient species on different planets. They can't even cope with different Abrahamic religions.

    Thanks for posting that

I do hope to see Arab characters in the show, not sure about having a Muslim character though. Gene was never a very religious guy and you could tell from TOS/TNG. Religion was all but forgotten, at least for humanity in the 23rd century (and beyond).

If they find a way to incorporate an alien race such as the Bajorans in DS9 with the same kind of beliefs and real-world problems that Muslims are facing today, I'd be all for it.

Arabs yes, religious ones, no. Last thing we need is bowing on the bridge. If we have Rod Rodd there to keep an eye on things, and Fuller wants it to stay Trek, then we should have no obvious religious characters.

The bingable thing is BS. Most fans will want to watch the show as it "airs" but for the cheap ones who are willing to wait a few months, pay for one month and sit through 144 minutes or commercials there should be an option. There needs to be something for late comers too. This doesn't impact me, but the business model bothers me so much that it actually affects me. I just can't stand companies that restrict things in order to manipulate people. Adding in all this nonsense to try to force the small fraction of fans that would use the wait and binge loophole is silly and, more importantly it is harmful to those fans who do purchase it. For example, the show will run over February vacation, a time that many families go on vacation and will likely let their TV viewership lapse. Depending on the day it releases they could easily fall behind by 3 episodes during the busy periods before and after vacation. So people like this, or those who have life issues come up that take them away from TV should be punished because some people will try to maximize their dollars and binge watch a show? No they should not.

I still think my 3-4 episodes free demo is still doable, but not anymore than that.

Keep in mind that this is way speculative at this point, and Beyer was responding to a fan question.
