Bujold Vs. Mulgrew

While I'm very happy that Kate Mulgrew had the role (she was the reason for which I watch ST: Voyager the first time and like Patrick Stewart and Avery Brooks, she was well auditionned 
), I learnt that Susan Gibney, Berman,'s favorite, who has performed Doctor Leah Brahms in TNG & Commander Erika Benteen in DS9 previously, has auditionned for Janeway & Seven of Nine's roles too?

I think that Susan Gibney would be a great Janeway, but if the writers aren't consistent, it is difficult for the actor to play a decent role
I'm curious to know if it's something specific about her delivery, or was it her gravelly voice or something else, entirely? Kate Mulgrew struck me as very experienced. Very professional. She'd done a lot of television, before, though I've never seen her in anything prior to VOY. I like her in STAR TREK, but she'd never caught my imagination, or anything. I'm not so interested in following her career, or anything like that.

Roots: The Gift. That was the episode right after Roots: Scorpion.
Well, I didn't like her from the start. Some people just don't appeal - it was probably a combination of her bearing, her voice and her hairstyle ! I certainly didn't warm to her and she came over as somewhat condescending.
I should point out that I didn't like Avery Brooks when DS9 started either, but I grew fond of his portrayal of Sisko as the show progressed. Even Ethan Phillips as Neelix made some headway with me, but Mulgrew never did.
Overall I thought Voyager had the weakest castings of any of the Trek shows.
Dunno what it is about the cast of Voyager but I never really gave a damn about any of them.
Poor casting perhaps or just unrealised potential.There was a softness about the cast, a lack of edge and urgency.
A crew in the dire circumstances of being stranded shouldn't be screwing about playing Captain Freakin' Proton.

If you give them the conceit of infinite resources and a perfect ship every week like the series (for the most part) did, then I actually think that things like "playing Captain Proton" aren't too unrealistic.
You can only spend so long in a state of heightened anxiety before you start going back to some kind of normal routine - or at least create your own new normal - which includes entertainment/escapism from your dire circumstances.

I have a total opposite opinion here.
I took an immediate liking to all the characters already in the first episode. The only time it has happened to me otherwise is when I watched the first episode of NCIS.
No offense to other Trek series but I found the Voyager characters more exciting in many ways, not the usual Starfleet crew. They were very different and came from different backgrounds. Still they completed each other. The premise for the show was great too. A ship lost on the other site of the galaxy, no Starfleet bases, no rescue fleet coming in the last moment. They really had to rely on themselves.

Brooks looked better with shaved head and goatee though...
It's always seemed to me that Bujold was to VOY what Jeffrey Hunter was to TOS. She was - no doubt - a very talented and experienced performer. But being a thespian shouldn't be more important than being entertaining. Mulgew understands the importance of being entertaining. She mugs for the camera, often, which I always found rather Shatneresque. In fact, Kate has always reminded me of a female Shatner.
