Bujold Vs. Mulgrew

There is an American version of the name Katherine?
A question for all of you English-speaking people from a foreigner:
Are Kathryn, Catherine, Katherine all possible ways of spelling in English, are they pronounced the same way and are they actually the same names?
What about Kate, Kathy, Katie, etc? Are these variations of the same name?

I pronounce them all the same. I live in Virginia if that makes a difference. Kate, Kathy and Katie are usually nicknames for Katherine.

I don't know what cave Jeri Taylor was living in or maybe it's just me but I've seen that name spelled all kinds of ways here in America. It didn't dawn on me that any of them had a particular 'nationality'.

Well, Q definitely considers himself to be a friend ...

 Well, I even think that he considered himself to be more, a potential suitor at best, a friend with benefits at worst! It could have been interesting and very funny to see especially in the light of nature. And Chakotay would have had enough to choke!

Gosh,what an informative clip.
It just demonstrates what different choices different actors make about the same role.I must confess to never have been a great fan of Ms.Mulgrew but I have to admit she gave a very naturalistic and humanising performance as Janeway.Time for a reassessment methinks.
In contrast the Bujold clip was as stiff and stilted as a drawing-room period piece.
Bujold looked jaded.

There is still something which questions me a little : was it really necessary to release these clips on the insipid performance of Bujold? I mean, it is clear that the French Canadian actress wasn't in her best element in these scenes, contrary to Kate Mulgrew. So, why not ot have let these rushes in the closet?
I don't think that an actress as talented as Geneviève Bujold deserved such a petty and humilating treatment and all the more that, she behaved rather fairly and with elegance towards the production, in withdrawing quickly from the project, admitting that Voyager wasn't made for her. Result:: her decision allowed to stop the mess what was coming before there are too many damages.

I just hope that they asked her agreement to release the rushes...

It was interesting to see the what if...personally I would have rather seen outtakes or deleted scenes.

Yes, it was interesting but I could have done without too. It would have been interesting to see, as outtakes, the auditions of all 7 actors, the TV ads aired at this period, etc... AND of course, the deleted scenes.

I don't know one way or the other but I doubt she cares.

If we take the "gray universe" version first: I have nothing against Bujold as an actress but this would never have worked. Everyone should be happy that Mulgrew got the job.

As for the Star Trek universe version of this:

Nicole Janeway, who can be found on some Youtube clips instead of Kathryn Janeway is actually Kathryn Janeway's aunt. A sister to Kathryn's father Edward Janeway.

Contrary to most members of the Janeway family, Nicole Janeway weren't interested at all in Starfleet and space exploring. She always considered her brother Edward a crazy fool who should have chosen another career instead of Starfleet.

"Man doesn't belong into space", she often said. "It's utter foolishness to travel around in those metal boxes in such dangerous environment".

When Edwards daughter Kathryn decided to join Starfleet, Nicole was furious. "You are a hopeless, reckless fool", she told Edward Janeway. "But worse is that you have raised your daughter to become one hopeless, reckless fool too", she said. And added, "This will end up in a disaster, believe me!"

Nicole Janeway often expressed her compassion for Kathryn's mother Gretchen. "I really feel sorry for her, marrying my stupid brother" but expressed sympathy for Kathryn's sister Phoebe who had chosen to become an artist instead.

When tragedy actually struck and Edward Janeway was killed during an exploring mission, together with Kathryn's fiancée Justin Tighe while Kathryn survived the accident, Nicole Janeway pestered everybody who wanted to listen with comments about "well, what did I say". Finally Phoebe Janeway got tired of hearing her aunt's complaints, lost her temper and told Nicole Janeway where to go.

When Voyager dissapeared in the Badlands, Nicole Janeway continued to tell everyone (except Gretchen and Phoebe Janeway who had broken all contacts with her) that Kathryn only had herself to blame for being as foolish as her father. Due to her not too diplomatic comments about certain family members, Nicole Janeway became rather isolated from the rest of the family. She continued to live on her ostrich farm in Colorado while keeping her negative opinion about space exploring.

The scene with Nicole Janeway as captain on Voyager was actually a nighmare Kathryn Janeway had two nights after Voyager left Ocampa, heading for the distant home. Only in a nightmare could Kathryn Janeway imagine her aunt as the captain on her ship.

I personally liked the performance of Bujold which I have seen before. There is a sense of humanity there that for me is missing in Mulgrew's depiction (throughout the series). Granted this small clip is not really much to judge what Bujold would have been like for the entire series but it (to me) illustrates the difference between a film actress and a TV actress. For me it's Mulgrew's Janeway that turns me off of Voyager (a series I have watched in it's entirety 3 times) because there is a hardness about her that makes her seem like a person that I would not hang out with in real life.

You're in the middle of nowhere surrounded by dangers and you're in charge of leading scores of people to safety and it's a long jourey. Sometimes you gotta be hard.
