But apparently the character was originally called Polara, and does have magnetic powers. So maybe there was some kind of semi-anagrammatic wordplay intended after all.

I think that's what Dick was referring to.

Yes, that is exactly what I meant. I am not sure if I have heard of her before this news. If she had different powers I might not have seen any similarity to Magneto's name at all. But reading her powers in that article at the same time as the name I made a connection.

She's the straight man of the show, someone has to be normal compared to the other characters who are mostly cartoons. It's a thankless job, but she really pulls of being normal surrounded by crazy people.

This is also more than I ever expected to talk about Awkward, at least on this board.

That, plus she was a love interest of Wally West in his New Teen Titans days, hence the Flash association.

I'm not familiar with the character, but the fact that the comic version is involved with Wally makes me wonder if he'll be involved with her story in the show.
EDIT: Andrew Kreisberg has said that Teddy Sears' Zoom may return as Black Racer eventually, but they don't have any plans for him to come back this season.

That plus her name is so close to a Marvel character with the same powers. Magneto. You think they would avoid characters like that.

Well, last year Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and DC's Arrow both featured Hive as the main villain, so it seems unlikely, that that is really a concern.

The Rival was originally Jay Garrick's nemesis in the Golden Age comics -- sort of his "Reverse-Flash" (and Wikipedia actually includes him in the Reverse-Flash article). I wonder if that will be the case here too. It'd give them an excuse to bring back Shipp as Earth-3 Jay.

Here is a new trailer. Barry is talking to John Wesley Shipp about time travel. While we know Henry Allen is alive in the alternated timeline, this seems more likely a conversation he would have with Jay Garrick.

So with The Rival, that mean's we'll have 3 evil speedsters this season, Reverse Flash, Savitar and The Rival. That'll be four if they move up some plans mentioned earlier in the thread.

Didn't they say that the character we thought was Savitar was actually the Rival instead? I think I read something suggesting that the Rival might be part of a cult worshipping Savitr (not a typo), the Hindu god of speed who's the origin of the Savitar character's name.

There seem to be a lot of contradicting casting reports for this new season. Hard to keep track of what is real and what is not.

CBR just posted an article going over all of the things we know about Season 3 so far.
According to the article The Rival was cast and he is a separate character from Savitar, who will be a one of the two big bads. People got them mixed up and were saying Todd Lascance was Savitar, when he's actually The Rival.
The article is dated yesterday, so I'm thinking it should be up to date with all of this casting news.

Well, I wouldn't be surprised. Exposing Wally and her to the weird energy and then having nothing happen would be the most anti-climatic thing ever.
