It's interesting. This thread was supposed to be about discussing "The Force Awakens". Yet, all I am encountering are criticisms of and discussions about the Prequel movies.

I didn't realize that "The Force Awakens" was that dull to talk about.
We're still talking about Star Wars, that's at least closer to the original topic than some threads have ended up.
We spent plenty of the thread discussing the movie, but at this point I think pretty much everything has been covered.

Conversation can't travel? That's nature of most of the threads that I have been on on this site.

Secondly, I thought I read that your opinion of TFA was a bit negative, so what aspect would be interesting to discuss for you?

Personally, I love TFA. I am fascinated by some of the implementations of technologies, the characters and the beginning of the characters, as well as the broader political changes to the galaxy at large. I think that TFA could have stood more exposition, but that's just me.

I think my next step is to read the book and listen to some podcasts :)

There are actually several. An adult-level one by Alan Dean Foster, a junior one by Michael Kogge, and two junior ones that tell the movie entirely from Rey and Finn's perspective (Rey's Story and Finn's Story, the latter coming out in a month or so).

All of them add little details and are canon. Personally, I think the Kogge one is by far the best. The Foster one is good, but was a little lacking, IMHO.

There's also the comic book adaptation that's currently coming out. I think it's on it's third or fourth issue right now.

I finally got to view SW:TFA on Blu-ray and saw the film for the first time today on a 55" screen in 5.1 surround.
It was entertaining and did what Disney set out to: introduce new characters to a new set of fans. These new lead characters will carry the next 3 films and introduce locations, story, characters to use in the spinoff films and TV series. The planet tie fighter and X-wing battles were entertaining. The lead Rey was a strong female character that has a lot of room for character development and story. While it was great to see the old Solo, Leia, Skywalker characters on screen I liked the talk about their mythology more. The production design/art direction matched pretty well the first 6 films well.
The music really made it feel like a Star Wars film.
I thought the cocky Poe's character was too much like the cocky Kirk in (2009) Star Trek. Pure JJ Abrams...
Enjoyed. I look forward to the documentary on the blu-ray about making the film.
It will probably 6-12 months before I watch this film again. Now I'd like to see the 1977 film again.

ILM has released their VFX reel for TFA.

The 6" Black Series figure of Unmasked Kylo Ren made its debut at Celebration Europe and San Diego Comic-Con in exclusive packaging with accessories that won't be released with the regular retail version of the figure (melted Darth Vader helmet, First Order banner and stand). The regular version has already been found in some Walmarts as those stores have gone ahead and stocked the first 6-inch Rogue One action figures several weeks ahead of the scheduled Force Friday release of merchandise for the new film (September 30th).

RedLetterMedia Returns to "rip"TFA a new one. Don't be fooled though, he spends the first 50 minutes ripping the cinematic universe industry and the Prequels again. Unlike his reviews on the Prequels, his complaints about the TFA are mostly nitpicks.

His complaints about STID were similarly nitpicky. At least I can enjoy CinemaSins and their tongue-in-cheek style. RLM simply lacks humor any more.

This is the best comment I found on their TFA video.

"This is a prime example of a company desperately trying to recapture the wondrous magic and creative intelligence of the original trilogy, but in the end creating something that feels hollow and only seems to rehash what we've already seen.

But enough about Red Letter Media...."

They pulled a George Lucas. Haha.

This is my shocked face.
It's funny, because in the Prequel reviews he flamed them for being assembly line cash grabs by Lucas. Now that Disney owns the property and really is turning Star Wars into assembly line cash grab, with a film a year and as many spin offs and tv shows as they can get away with. I think Mike is having more than a few seconds thoughts.

Just watched the movie this weekend for the first time. Thought it was great. Although a lot the ideas were rehashed from the original trilogy. Father vs. Son, Death Star, Shields, shoot the one target that takes down the whole thing. Hero from a desert planet, dark lord ordering around the main antagonist, the droid that they're looking for, search for the master jedi. But it still felt fresh enough and entertaining. Looking forward to see where they're gonna go with these movies in the future.
