Star Trek Discovery

OK....

First of all, thank you for the link. Secondly....

Did you notice how the title of the web page, "'Star Trek Discovery': Woman to Captain Ship", is not the headline of the article, "CBS All Access' 'Star Trek: Discovery' to Be Captained By a Woman, Feature Gay Character," and that both are anywhere from not supported to outright contradicted by the second paragraph? The actual headline is one of those cute plays on words you see so often in headlines: the literal meaning is that the lead character is a woman but it carries with it the expectation that the lead will in fact have the position of captain. Yet, nowhere at all in the article does it say that she will be in command. In fact, the second paragraph reports on Fuller's comments that the series will "explore stories from a different point of view." Exploring things from a different point of view won't happen if the lead is the ship captain.

We shall see, of course, but I'm betting that the Hollywood Reporter got this completely wrong, in their web page title. In addition, the second paragraph has the complete nonsense "The top-ranking member of the fleet will instead be a lieutenant commander", which is a pretty big indication that the article was probably written by someone with no intimate knowledge of Star Trek, who moreover jumped to unsupported conclusions about what Fuller was saying.

This new series will involve a diverse cast, alien characters, and a new starship design? They're ruining "Star Trek" by putting too much "Star Trek" in "Star Trek"! They're just making all the same mistakes that made TNG so lame and unpopular with fans and TV audiences!

If you're upset about a "Star Trek" series with a diverse cast, set on a starship that looks different from previously shown starships, then you must hate about 90 percent of "Star Trek." I am often baffled by people claiming to be "Star Trek" fans ... except for the 83 percent of "Star Trek" that they hate.

I am a fan of the whole 50-year franchise. Yes, there have been some really bad episodes and movies from all the incarnations. But there have been some really good episodes evenly distributed over the decades.

I will keep an open mind, and I fully expect that at least one episode from the new series will join my top-10 favorite episodes, along with "The City on the Edge of Forever," "Yesterday's Enterprise," "The Inner Light," "The Visitor," "Timeless," and "Twilight." (Yes, all of my favorite episodes seem to involve everyone dying, then being saved through some kind of time paradox -- but those were darn good episodes with good acting.) I also hope that there will be a compelling and charismatic new character that I can add to my list of favorites, along with Spock, Worf, Garak, Weyoun, the EMH, Shran, et al. Each series had its ups and downs, but there were some really great actors and stories in every incarnation of the series. I don't expect that to change next year.

For me, both the design of the ship and the setting feel very anti-climactic and unexciting. But because of that, I have a sneaking suspicion that the show's gonna be awesome. It's going to have to be.

So after the Kelvin event making the whole Prime Universe setting stupid IMO.

Also it seems the show’s lead character will be a human female but not a captain. She is a “Lieutenant Commander with caveats...Lt Commander should not be commanding starships.

Why should be the Prime Universe stupid? Anyhow, the Kelvin timeline is by Paramount for the movies. As for the explanation I recommend for you to re-watch the TNG episode called "Parallels".

As for the Lt Commander comment, look for Fullers comments:
"The star won’t be the captain but rather be a lieutenant commander, “with caveats,” he said. “We’ve seen six series from the captain’s point of view; to see a character from a different perspective on the starship — one who has a different dynamic relationships with a captain, with subordinates, it gave us richer context.”"

So the main character will have a different dynamic relationship with the captain. SO there will be a captain on the ship but we get to have the PoV of a Lt Commander for the main character.

Nice going MSM, you rock at your jobs!

Archive footage from TOS would have made far more sense and... Seemingly would have been easier to obtain? Oh well. This si why I stay away from TV News Networks.

CNN took footage from Renegades and included in their piece about the new show. Bloody lazy reporting...
Without the sound on, Renegades is almost watchable! To be fair, it is quite a "modern" looking Trek production, giving more of an idea what to expect than older footage would.

I believe you're taking sarcasm as something serious.

Sorry if this has already been brought up before, but I was wondering if these tweets by Bryan Fuller are referencing the TNG finale “All Good Things”.

This is the response he gave to fans who have been critical of the era STD is set. Could this be a clue that the new series, like the episode “All Good Things”, could be set in different eras, but that the events all tie in together somehow? We know that the show will be set 10 years before Kirk, but perhaps this is just one of several eras we will get to see.

He means all good things come to an end i.e. the TNG era came to an end with Nemesis. The nerdy pun being that also happened to be the name of the TNG finale. What he's trying to say nicely is 'move on'.
