It's now confirmed that Star Trek: Discovery will be set in the Prime Universe, 10 years before Kirk's 5-year mission. That makes it sometime around the year 2255.
I really fucking wish they weren't doing another prequel.
Its success or failure will be due to how compelling it is. Not what fictional timeframe it takes place.
So after the Kelvin event making the whole Prime Universe setting stupid IMO.
Also it seems the show’s lead character will be a human female but not a captain. She is a “Lieutenant Commander with caveats...Lt Commander should not be commanding starships.

She's the focus of the show, she isn't the captain though. There's that old mindset Fuller was talking about!
It's gonna be Lower Decks-esque, except I imagine she'll be on the bridge crew.

The new lead IS going to be the one in the "center seat"; she just won't carry the rank of Captain.
Nautical tradition could have the crew still address him/her as "Captain" or "Skipper", while occupying the center seat, regardless of grade.
^ That isn't just naval tradition; it's also Star Trek tradition.

Quite right. Saavik was a good case in point there, and she was only a cadet Lieutenant.
Long and short of it, any commissioned officer can command a ship.

Yall remember the TNG episode The Lower Decks? The show was about crewmembers, not staff. And there is a very long history of military shows not always involving The Captain. We'll be seeing all the action through the eyes of a crew member. That, to me, is intriguing.
This article from Trek Core does refer to the Captain as a separate character from the lead. It also says that we should expect to see robots and a few more aliens than usual and that some of them will be reimaginings of existing aliens. It also says that Amanda Grayson and Section 31 might play a role.
I am disapointed we aren't going forward past Nemesis. We already got one prequel series, so I would rather go forward again, than back again. I'm still excited for the show, and I'm not going to give up on it, but it's not what I wanted.
