Star Trek Discovery

Indeed, for a fuller (no pun intended) report:

Star Trek: Discovery show runner Bryan Fuller tweeted the following tease of a photo, captioned simply "#StarTrekDisco MAKEUP TEST". Now is we assume Star Trek Disco does indeed refer to the TV series, rather than the exciting new 50th anniversary pop-up dance venue... It sure looks a lot like there's an Andorian due to visit the USS Discovery.

Of course this could be some other alien with antennae. But surely we all want Andorians back? And surely the obvious connection is not unknown to super trekkie Fuller.

Also the CEO of CBS hints at future seasons, and spin offs:

We also struck a significant international deal with Netflix for ‘Star Trek,’ licensing our new series ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ to 188 Netflix countries around the world – virtually everywhere but North America.

In addition, we licensed all 727 previous episodes of our ‘Star Trek’ library. Plus, we struck a similar deal with Bell Media for Canada.

As a result, ‘Star Trek: Discovery,’ our new series, is profitable – and we haven’t even begun production.

Going forward, obviously, we’re doing thirteen episodes initially with ‘Star Trek,’ we are fairly certain – although we haven’t done one day of production – that the series is gonna go on for a while.

We have spin-offs of spin-offs, you know? It’s a very, very valuable franchise that can turn into hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for us
And Netflix has a synopsis for the series:

The iconic franchise returns with a fresh series, new characters and a new ship. Their mission: Explore new worlds, bring hope to a new generation.
Via their new page for the series.

Not sure that's actually a make up test. The background looks more like a prop shop than a make up room. Fuller may be funnin' us....

This synopsis doesn't tell us a lot, it is rather generic!!
I actually thought the "bringing hope to a new generation" portion says quite a bit even though it isn't too specific. New generation could mean post-Nemesis. I suppose it could mean any timeframe which hasn't been covered by a series/movie yet. But, more likely, it means moving forward in the timeline.

The "bring hope" suggests a downfall or down turn in events. To me, it lends support to the idea that the Federation has experienced a setback sometime after Nemesis and the new crew is trying to fix things. You could tie that into the retro design. They're in trouble and had to pull the old ship out of mothballs.

All speculation for sure!

Or it could just mean to a new generation of viewers.
Yeah, that's my take on it. 'Bring hope' - Star Trek's old hope for the future tag - 'to a new generation' - i.e. new viewers, too young for TNG and its spin-offs in first airing. Netflix needed something to write in the description box, so they went with something that makes it sound new and exciting. I don't think there's a hint to the content there really apart from excluding station/planet based shows, which we sort of already knew.

"Bring hope to a new generation" makes it sound like we're in the Dark Ages of television and Star Trek is here to save us if it's a real-world thing

Considering the most popular show on TV right now consists of political backstabbing and violence, and recent popular characters have included serial killers, drug dealers and convicts - maybe it is time to be saved by being able to switch on a Netflix show and see a hero :p

As long as the first episode isn't: "OK, new crew, let's take this baby for a shake down cruse." Things break, hilarity ensues, phasers work at the last second to save the day.

And if the ending consists of another character pulling a lever to kill everyone, I'll quit watching Star Trek and The 100.
