Star Trek Discovery

The universe doesn't matter. The guest actors don't matter. Even the ship design doesn't matter.

What matters is good scripts (and good directing).

And anyone who actually knows anything about Fuller knows not to expect a continuation of the tail-end of the Berman years.
No these things matter of course, in part because the scripts have to be based there and in part because of audience expectations..I'm not saying they will base it on what fans want, but only that fan interest will change based on it's milieu. Eventually the as the season(s) continue the story-line will make or break it, but the setting isn't inconsequential.

You are detecting wrong. As has been mentioned almost incessantly, the design is almost a duplicate of the Planet of the Titans design which has no Klingon influence at all.

You're wrong as well. It is influenced by that design but it's anything but a duplicate. I don't like the PotT design. I love the Discovery ship.

I certainly felt that when he was hired. I hope that's still the case and he will make a really fresh show with a Fuller signature. My only concern is how much he seems to be fanboying about it, talking about Gene's Vision (TM) and so on. The inference could be made that he's a little overwhelmed by the size of the property he's now in charge of. Hopefully he's just playing the game for the 50th anniversary and he's still got the confidence to take the show somewhere new.
He's got a history with Trek, and he's been in control of part of a big franchise before with Hannibal, so I doubt he's that overwhelmed. I know Trek is a bigger deal than Hannibal Lector, but it still shows that he's able to deal with projects that carry a lot of big fan expectations.

It's an amalgam of the MacQuarrie and Ken Adams ships..I'd say maybe it shares 80% or more of their features? So not liking it is really kind of illogical.

RAMA

Isn't Discovery the name of the ship that gets blown to pieces when it gets close to the first world of the changelings in DS9?

It's not even in my top 10 favorite star trek ships, though it is a nice design.

It just doesn't look much like them. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Considering that the basic premises of Trek could be taken in virtually any direction, I think the original concept serves as a useful guideline. This is important, because looking at Fuller's original shows, they don't align with Gene's Vision, being quirky stories about outsiders told with underlying dark irony. I think Fuller is smart and talented enough to know that following his own instincts without restriction will produce something not quite Trek. And Fuller cares enough about Trek to avoid that problem.

It'll be a tricky balancing act, but at this point I have faith it'll work.

The Connie refit isn't in your Top 10?

Damn. That raises my curiosity. What would you name as your top 5 ship designs in Trek then?
