Right now I'm thinking Discovery is TMP-era. There's around ten years between that and Wrath of Khan, yes?

They won't wear the fugly grey and beige space jammies, though. Starfleet's Department of Angular Starships will have a unique and infinitely better costume.

Space jammies might actually look better on this ship than in TMP.

Admittedly the actual cut of the unis in TMP was bad and the material was too thin, but Space 1999 season 1 shows you can make the concept work.

The great thing about retro is it's a chance to get the past right on the second try. :)

We have a '70s ship design, you're suggesting '70s TMP/Space 1999/Buck Rogers space pajamas, I'll say let's go full '70s and have the female crew wear UFO wigs and costumes. ;)

I always feel blah about prequels because we already know Starfleet, the Federation, the Alpha Quadrant, etc. are ticking along perfectly fine by the 23rd Century. I hope it's set after the TNG/DS9/Voyager era. I'm sick of going backwards.

Yeah but the survival of the Federation is only one emotional touchstone amongst millions they could use.

I'm gonna be really disappointed now if it's not this.

If the Federation went with 60s decor in TOS, they should have a 70s period in DIS.

Good, now we just have to get a message to Fuller that we've got this sorted! :D

This. This is what they all should wear. Shiny electric-blue bodyhugging disco PJs. I now realise this what I've always wanted....

:scream:

Yup, with these we've got the whole costuming thing covered! ;)

And if someone asks what era the USS Discovery NCC-1031 will be from the answer is "the 1970s my man"!

I think Discovery is likely from after TOS and before The Motion Picture. Its phasers are movie style, it has a central saucer area like the Oberth, it has segmented hull skin and Aztecing like movie ships, the original story for the ship's concept places it pre-TMP, it is blockier than movie ships placing it closer to the basic shapes of TOS ships, and most importantly the mid-TOS-TMP period is a blank slate. The same can be said of the movie-TNG period, but the impression I get from the ship's angularity says to me the ship's launch must be earlier. There is also the asteroid based dry dock which is unique and has to place the ship outside of TNG and later series and movies. It doesn't fit the early movies either, so the only place in time which really makes sense to me is if the asteroid dock comes from the TOS, or post-TOS period.

Additionally, with the modern fetish for origin stories it is almost inconceivable the show will drop us in the laps of an experienced crew and experienced ship, as was done with TOS. TNG, VOY, and ENT all started on the first day of the respective captains' and crews' careers on their particular fresh from the docks ships. We are very unlikely to find Discovery is a 20 year old ship, launched pre-TMP, with multiple past captains and crews, with the current captain having been in command for a year or so in the post-movie era. That being said, I would be happy to see that setup.

I am gonna say right now, if i looks like 1960's or 1970's I am out. I hope it crashes and burns if they go that rout. As fans, we should admit it was a freaking show and this is how the people of the time thought it would look. Worse thing they ever did on enterprise and DS9 was to reinforce the 1960's look as the real past.
