I recently realized that I never finished reading the SCE/Corps of Engineers series from several years back....
This series really was ahead of its time, with its serialized, character-based storytelling in a novella format -- it's a lot like what Serial Box is doing now with series like Ellen Kushner's Tremontaine.
Not Trek, but a Trek author: I just re-read Greg Cox' Loose Ends, a novel based on the Roswell TV show. The first time I read it (on release) I had never watched the show, only read the original Roswell High books. They share characters with the same names, but the story, characterization, and virtually everything are worlds apart. I was so confused the first time -- "Who are the Skins? Who is Tess? Why do they like Valenti? Why do they keep mentioning Czechoslovakians?!". This time around, having watched the series through at least four times, I enjoyed it much more. I'm not re-reading it randomly..I am going to New Mexico later this year and am reading fiction set there this summer.
Trivia: Bizarrely, Loose Ends was published in France as The Assassins Never Forget, which came as a surprise to me when I got a copy.
