Star Trek Discovery

Will Discovery possibly being set before TOS Do you guys think we're see any Enterprise-Era characters (Like Jonathan Archer, Soval, T'Pol, T'Pau) or TOS characters (Like Sarek, Chris Pike, Robert April, Sarek) appear in the series?

I'm hoping that it is no to the former, yes to the latter. But I would prefer that they just do their own thing and keep characters from the other trek series to a minimum.

Just keep it canon is my advice to the showrunners.

I have rather mixed feelings about USS Discovery. I like the overall idea of it, but I'm not sure the proportions are quite right, and I personally wouldn't mind a little more blending between the basic elements. Right now it feels, to me, like a handful of geometric volumes roughly grafted together into something with definite potential, but that needs more refinement to truly come to life. In other words, like a working model; I look forward to seeing how it evolves, as I don't doubt it will.

As to the show, I'm encouraged by the production staff's comments. Here we have a real chance to truly get into the themes of diversity that Trek hasn't, for reasons of social, studio, network or producer pressures, been able to explore as much as many might like, and I have hope it'll be grasped with both hands.

As to when in the timeline it'll be set, I couldn't even begin to guess, and I actually rather like that. By its very nature, Trek gives you ample freedom no matter when or where you place your show. It's a big old universe, after all, with so much left to, well... :)

I think that the reason Discovery has a more "industrial" look to her is tied directly to the story line and mission. In other words, she's not just another ship exploring strange new worlds. Something has happened or changed which necessitates such a design. The more I think about her the more I like that beast! :techman:

I hope they find a way to give us an appearance from either a Voyager or Enterprise cast member, depending on the era. Every Trek series since TOS and Enterprise has had an appearance by a cast member from the last series in the pilot. Enterprise didn't have a Voyager cast member, but it did have an apperance by James Cromwell as Zefram Cochrane, so will still got a familiar character. The Kelvin timeline movies even kind of did this when they brought in Leonard Nimoy.

With the design of the ship, a triangle pointing into the saucer section, how long will it be before some tongue-in-cheek crewmen give her the nickname 'Old IDIC?' :p
Huh... Now that you mention it, this actually makes me wonder if this is, in fact, a Vulcan-built ship. Some have commented on the coppery color of the hull. A similar color was used in the Prime universe on the Vulcan shuttle in TMP, the exploration vessel in "First Contact" and the Romulan-commandeered Vulcan ships in TNG's "Reunification" all had this color palette to varying degrees, as opposed to the white/duck egg blue of standard Fed hulls. Also in the Prime universe, we've seen SF ships of a predominantly Vulcan influence, such as the Intrepid from TOS' "Immunity Syndrome". In the NuUniverse, it has been shown that, in Spock's Jellysfish ship was designed with the IDIC motif in mind, with the triangular control chair juxtaposed with the main circular forward window. This demonstrates that the Vulcans can sometimes feel the need to include an "ego signature" within a design. All these design elements are present in the Discovery. I'm fairly convinced, now, that the Vulcans are going to play a major role in this new series.

That's the second time recently I've come across someone claiming this of the Surak from TMP and the T'Pau from "Unification" (TNG). It isn't true:

However, it is of course true that the T'Plana-Hath from FC and the various Vulcan ships on ENT ranged from red to reddish-brown:

So AICN has Fuller saying the registry number is a big clue and that if you're familiar with section 31 mythology you can read a lot into the events of the first season....
Having any ship with 31 in its registry be controlled by Section 31 would be really lame. :(

Although what Fuller actually says is more vague:
“There are aspects of our first season that, depending on how well versed you are in that mythology, you could either read into it a connection," said Fuller, "or not."

Much more importantly:
Keep your eyes glued to the Internet on Aug. 10; Fuller says he’s going to “spoiler it up” during the “Star Trek” panel on that penultimate day here at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

Admiral Archer walks through back of shot, slips on a banana peel. Everybody wins!

We never saw the Intrepid on screen unless it was shown in the remastered version which I haven't seen.

I was thinking more along the lines of Admiral Archer's unnamed beagle that Scotty accidentally lost, but Porthos would do too. :)

Old IDIC in the STD show?
The jokes, o my God, the bad, bad jokes write themselves...

Maybe the ship is a new design following the Dominion War. Maybe it looks the way it does partly because it is designed to be built quickly, resulting in a choice of straight rather than curvy lines.

The ship may be intended to quickly build up a decimated Star Fleet .

Not a premier/flagship of the fleet, but rather a utility vessel.

It will start with Riker and Troi starting a new holodeck program.
