I don't really care of the gender of the new capitain as long as she/he is good but after 4 male capitains for 1 female capitain, it would be time to get another female capitain to rebalance the situation and preferably, someone as Kate Mulgrew, who was perfect choice for the role ... even if she got the role after Geneviève Bujold. Oh and it would be terrific to see Janeway as Admiral, btw.
Angela Bassett, Gillian Anderson or even better, someone like Cate Blanchett would be great.
And please, no attempt of romance between the capitain and her First Officer (or whoever amongst officers of Discovery). Didn't like what they tried to do with Janeway/Chakotay -> fortunately, Mulgrew opposed some acceptable objections to avoid the pairing and the producers agreed! OUF!

I was just thinking, that Amy Acker would be a great choice for numerous reasons. She can really play everything, a very talented actress. She should also be free right now, as Person of Interest has ended. And she has a certain geek cred already, so she should have some fans, who would give DIS a chance just because of her.

Though my vote would be for Nathen Fillion.
Pretty safe bet. You know he can handle the role and has extensive sci fi experience and would be his own style of captain.plus makes sense from a commercial aspect as will bring a big fan face.
As for the film A-listers people are dreaming about please get real. Yes they have more money to spend but that sort of cost would pretty much reduce the series to a single actor/actress monologue behind card boad cutouts.

so why do we need to "get real"? Especially since no one thinks the "film A-listers" will do it. It's all in good fun.

I think the noise coming out of Comic con hinted towards a black female captain, so Torres would perhaps make the most sense. She's a terrific actress and frequent Fuller collaborater. She's also the right age to play a starfleet captain.

I like Nathan Fillion but the temptation for him would be overwhelming to turn his new character into some caricature of Mal Reynolds or make tongue in cheek references to space cowboys, etc. Love Firefly, but don't want to see this schtick in Trek.
Not sure who will play the Captain, but would love to see the Captain have a background in Engineering this time... I know that was suggested in the book with Sisko... but would be nice to see it on an actual series.

Well, I think that all the rumors about why ABC series Castle ended have not done great things for Nathan Fillion's public image. Plus, his recent appearance at San Diego Comic-Con certainly didn't help things.

It isn't so much words he said but rather his attitude during the interview he gave to TVline's reporter where he quite disrespected the fans & the show, which allowed him to live generously during 8 years.
