Star Trek Discovery

OK, I'll change the post type for those that want to be snarky or else have difficulty inferring and prefer things spelled out to meet their demanding tastes.

In less than a week of the USS Discovery design being shown at SDCC, it is now the top result (and several front page results) for a Google search of "Ugly Star Trek Ships."

It's almost as if a lot of people around the world think that the design is ugly.

There, does that feel all better? Is your boo boo better?

Folks on a discussion board expecting posters to have something to say, radical.

Wow, did you think no one has noticed that before you came along with those mad Google-fu skills?

Seems this thread has completely derailed now. I posted a relevant article a few pages back and it was lost amidst the drama.

Hoorah. Another thread dies another typical internet death.

In a lame and most likely unsuccessful attempt to revive it:

I always like the concept behind Planet of the Titans but was never a big fan of Adam's or McQuarrie's redesigns of the Enterprise. If I had to choose between the two then I prefer Adam's. The secondary hull of the McQuarrie concept is just too damn big when compared to the saucer or nacelles but my bias is purely for aesthetic reasons.

As for the Discovery, I neither hate it nor love it. It's obviously a promo that's been thrown together quickly and as has been pointed out by others several of the producers have said its not the final design. Hell if McQuarrie's estate objects then they'll probably have to start over anyway. My only real objection to the design is the sections that have been cut out the saucer as well as the giant fan blades. Seems like one hell of a waste of space. The turbo charger bussard collectors aren't great either but are not a big deal. I also hope they'll soften the lines a little bit.

As for Fuller and Kadin's comments about the show during their panel, I have no strong opinions one way or the other. They haven't said enough to get worked up over. Gay characters, whatever. Female captain, whatever. Diverse cast, whatever. Just give me good stories and explore the final frontier for God sakes. There hasn't been any true get up and go exploring in Star Trek since the first two seasons of TNG.

I'll admit that the serialized format does give me pause. I liked it in Babylon 5 and Farscape but I've found that the concept has worn thin for me in the past decade. The occasional episodic story would be nice.

I saw the article you posted and found it very interesting. Nice to know where the NCC-1031 comes from.

Its Look Will Be Very Different from J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek

Forget the abundance of swooping curves on NuTrek’s Enterprise, Fuller’s Discovery has a healthy helping of straight lines, inspired by Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie’s designs for Gene Roddenberry’s never-produced 1970s Star Trek series.

“We were looking for a new aesthetic,” explains Fuller. “We can’t just go back to the same aesthetic. You look at what J.J. Abrams did with that 2009 movie, which reinvented Star Trek in such a wonderful way and claimed that territory. So we had to strike new ground that had Star Trek in its DNA at a fundamental level. To make a commitment to the fanbase, who are aware of Star Trek and its iterations—both the shows that made it to the airwaves and the ones that didn’t. So it felt like a really nice way to let the hardcore Star Trek audience know that I have their backs.”

I can appreciate Fuller's intent of showing his knowledge of Trek, but I think using the PotT design to show he had hardcore Trek audience's back may have backfired on him. The fact that he seems to say they didn't want to tread on Abram's territory is the reason for the less graceful design seems crazy to me. All said and done, though, I can live with the design, especially if they do some tweaking of proportions and softening of some of the lines.

It's a really good article. The speculation about Mae Jemison being the basis of the new Captain is... perhaps a little thin, but it's a lovely thought. It would sure be neat to see it happen that way. (Also learned some things about Jemison I didn't know, and the 100 Year Starship project looks fascinating.)

"We're looking for a new aesthetic" is the happiest thing that the executive producers of this show could say as far as I'm concerned.

I don't think there's a version of Trek that I haven't loved the look of, including series that I disliked in terms of content. But the modern Trek shows reached back to Trek's TOS beginnings for their core look, elaborating it further and further to the point that it's visually exhausted.

The Abrams movies did similarly, using TOS as a jumping off point but then contextualizing that as an expression of mid-century design - those bridge "tulip chairs" and the like became the whole inspiration for the look of the Enterprise.

Let the new show acknowledge that for nearly as long as Trek has been going - back as far as the movie 2001, at least - other science fiction films and tv shows have developed pretty extensive futuristic design vocabularies that Discovery can incorporate.

You do realize that every show has a contingent of fans that think the ship is ugly?

Yep.

Never quite seen this instant and dramatic of a reaction, however, and never felt the repulsion myself until now :P

Closest I can remember is the NX Enterprise because the design seemed to actually break established canon.

The ship isn't "finalized" yet. I don't much like it either, but I'll patiently wait. I didn't like the Enterprise in TNG at first either, but it grew on me. Man, that was a long time ago. In high school back in the 60s when I saw TOS Enterprise for the first time, it's image implanted itself in my brain somewhere and since then, any spaceship without a saucer just doesn't seem right. LOL

The last season of ENT actually had the best mix of single episodes (1), two and three parter. Instead of reducing the structure on one, they should select it depending on the story. That would also surprise the audience, because they would never know what they get - and when a story ends and a new one begins.

“We were looking for a new aesthetic,” explains Fuller.

They made the decision to go "prime", so they have to follow the aesthetics of that universe. "Bullshit" I say to Fuller and shake my fist at him. Forcefully.
