What do you want to see in Star Trek 4?

A title card.

Yes!

And a better opening scene which leads to that title card. The first scene in "Beyond" was just okay. Can't compare to the dramatic final battle of the Kelvin or the spectacular rescue of Nibiru. I wouldn't mind a comeback of J.J. Abrams on the cirector's chair.

If they continue to parallel major aspects of the original movies, Star Trek 4 will probably involve Time Travel and lots of humor. I'm on board for humor. But please, no time travel yet.

No offense, but I get really tired of this idea that they are "paralleling" the original movies, and therefore we must expect everything to be an unoriginal carbon copy.

Where are the parallels?

ST09: Time-traveling, maniacal Romulan changes history and tries to destroy Federation because of personal beef. How does this parallel V'Ger et al.?

STiD: This was the only one that had overt (but twisted) copies from it's "predecessor", but that was essential to the plot.

STB: Maniacal ex-Federation officer wants to destroy Federation because of personal beef. "Enterprise is destroyed" doesn't cut it as a parallel, since the situations were completely different. In fact, STB parallels ST09 much moreso than STIII.

Granted, this are details and not plot, but that's kind of what is being paralleled. They are obviously not remaking every film in the series. They just remade one :)

ST09: the gathering of the cast, the intro to the new ship, giant alien vessel coming to destroy earth. Ends with Kirk taking permanent command.

STID: Khan, main character dies saving the ship, Enterprise vs another Federation ship, Carol Marcus

STB: Enterprise destroyed, strong focus on the crew being a family, movie starts with Kirk's log detailing his low emotional state and the Enterprise pulling into a giant space dock (even some of the shots were homages).

Do I want to see time travel next movie? Nah. Comedy? These have TONS of comedy, so making the 4th one lighter is nonsense. Even the darkest of the three had a ton of (sometimes goofy) humor. I just want a film like Beyond; one that captures the essence of the original series and characters yet is updated to reflect the requirements of a modern Hollywood blockbuster. Beyond is the first of the Abrams Era films to get EVERY character right. I'm thinking of Kirk, specifically, who has FINALLY grown up.

For every "detail" you claim they are recycling, I can find 1000 that are not. It's a ridiculous stretch to make the connection to the movies paralleling the original ones.

Since you're fond of using quotes to make a point, please list those "1000." I'll wait.

I'm not saying they're "recycling" anything, just that certain points could be seen as being hit in a certain order. I admit that connecting ST09 to TMP was harder than the other two films.

It's a ridiculous stretch to make the connection to the movies paralleling the original ones.

To you. Not to others, obviously. Or maybe it's just a cool coincidence that fans are noticing. Who cares? If you don't agree, awesome. But you don't have to suck the fun out of making the connections.

There's no shame in using an element from the TOS TV series for the next movie, just as Khan was used again for TWOK.

In addition to the Doomsday Machine mentioned by section9, there's the Guardian of Forever (JTK can meet papa that way); the Enterprise Incident (Romulan intrigue and espionage); Mirror Mirror etc.

Keep it simple and on message. Heck, we haven't seen Bones cure a space plague yet!

We don't need another big bad guy bent on destroying the universe with another unstoppable plot device whom we know the crew of the Enterprise will stop.

There is no suspense in those stories anymore.

Just time and circumstance being against the crew will make for awesome viewing.

Before Beyond I wanted to see the Federation finally clash with the Klingons... and see how Kirk and co react now that they took the Vengeance off the table. Beyond went, well, beyond expectation. So I don't really know what I'd want to see plot-wise. What can you mine from the original series that is deep enough to expand into a movie plot? Sure, the Doomsday machine is there, but I'd like for something more interesting.

I do agree that Id like to see Justin Lin come back to direct and Pegg with Jung on the writing team. It's nice to see so many trek fans happy with Beyond where there was outrage against the new movies in the past. This crew did it right, and I'd like to see another Trek film by them.

I would also like to see the A put up a successful fight. I do wonder if they haven't had the Enterprise hold her own past 2009 because "fighting in Star Trek is BAD!", but c'mon, a lot of fans are like me and love the hardware. We want to see the new A hold her own against hostile alien forces.

Perhaps for 4 they could bring back the godlike energy beings we haven't seen since Q. Maybe like the Metrons, some being to throw the crew into a perilous situation to try understanding why mortal beings like the crew are so special.

The Enterprise not be destroyed or trashed. After Into Darkness' "let's nearly crash the Enterprise" and Beyond's "let's actually crash the Enterprise" I'd like to see them find another way to separate the crew from the safety blanket of the ship.

Oh, and Captain Robau. You cannot bring back George Kirk without Captain Richard Fucking Robau.

Ships get trashed whenever they want to redesign the bridge set. Looking forward to new bridge, less "hot rod" nacelles. I kinda want more of the same, Lin/Pegg. This latest movie was about as good a balance of trek-feel with modern blockbuster I could hope for. Plot details insignificant if they keep the story moving forward.

A villain that dominates the story the way the Joker dominated The Dark Knight.

Kor

I want to see 4:

1. Still be set in deep space (no Earth) during their five year mission. Continue using space itself as an ominous and dangerous setting, like we see in Beyond.

2. Not be about time travel. A flashback or hologram of Kirk's dad is fine, but not a story revolving around time travel. Explore space, not time travel. The entire point of the Kelvin Timeline reboot in the first place was to create a blank slate for the galaxy. Use it.

3. Incorporate Jaylah into the crew. The character is a winner.

4. Like Beyond, continue portraying the crew as a tight-knit family. Strong relationships built on trust and intelligent humor. We've moved beyond the rivalries and animosities.

5. A different kind of villain or challenge: not a singular baddie with a special weapon. The Swarm in Beyond was definitely a big step in the right direction. It was a fresh change of pace from the Bigger Badder Ship. The Doomsday Machine could be brilliantly reimagined. Reimagined versions of Trelane or Mudd or The Cloud Minders or the Tholian Web or something entirely new and different.

6. Elongated shots of the Enterprise-A. Let us soak in this ship with slower visuals, set to good music. Doesn't need to be TMP-like slow, but give us a little time to love her.

Do time travel, bring back Cumberbatch, set the film during the Eugenics Wars on Earth.

If I'm paying for the movie, that is what I'm doing.

I couldn't disagree more. I was delighted that JJ was distanced from Beyond and had high hopes that Trekkie Pegg would deliver a more satisfying story.

It really was just more of the same. Apart from a little more in the way of character moments, it was business as usual with a breakneck mix of frantic action, superhuman physical combat, poor motivation, plot holes and a motorbike.

Apart from on this site the response is not as positive. Let's hope if there is a fourth film, it's radically different.
