You want to make a star trek movie? Fine, but the tv show has to come first, you develop a new set of characters that the audience get to know and love, then you put those characters in a movie, thats how star trek works. Why should i buy into chris pine as james t kirk or zachary quinto as spock, the actors who played those roles are irreplaceable, i don't want to see different actors playing those roles. If you are going to have different actors playing those roles in a reboot of the old show at least do the tv show first, going straight to the movie is just cheating, its nothing more then a cynical lazy cash in on the star trek licence and its absolutely pathetic. As far as i am concerned these modern ''star trek'' movies have nothing to do with the real star trek universe, i view them on the same level as the fan made star trek episodes that you see on youtube. I refuse to even watch them, i have not and will not do so. For me TNG was the golden age of star trek, it hasn't quite hit those heights since in my opinion although I also loved the Voyager series. I am looking forward to the new star trek series in 2017, i hope it will bring star trek back to its former glories and recapture the magic.

p.s. also this is my first post on the forums so hello everyone

I feel for you. I was hopeful that bringing back the iconic characters would rejuvenate that time period but they screwed the pooch in a number of ways. They dumbed down the science a bit too much and upgraded the tech to even more magical levels, which they then had to hand wave away to avoid busting their own plot.

I will concede that the actors are universally good and I know many non-Trek fans who love these movies so I don't like to be too elitist, despite my own reservations. I feel that they took a step towards making them children's movies where stupid heroics instead of intelligent tactics win the day. I wish they'd been able to increase the pace and excitement while retaining more of the core of the franchise.

I'd be more than happy to watch an animated show with these characters, where the childishness will feel less out of place or even a second 5-year mission of the TOS prime characters. I don't think the reboot has has much longevity but they might ruthlessly introduce younger characters to pass on the torch. I doubt we'll see 60 year old Cho or Saldana carrying on in these roles.

That didn't work very well for TNG.

That's not really the way you make movies.

I always felt they should have just done a clean reboot instead of an alternate "pocket universe" branched off from the tos universe created by the tos Spock with the red matter and a wormhole. A parallel universe would have worked as well. I just can't buy the fact that the destruction of one ship caused so many differences. Some which would be completely impossible.(ie.sexual orientation of a character)

Shoe horning the TOS Into this "reboot" always seemed forced and unnatural.

Now waiting for this to be closed...:(

TOS, their movies and some NG crossover episodes are the prequels to the Numovies.

I loved the ST'09 versions of the characters, I cared about them and what happened to them. Moreso than several of the characters from Voyager and Enterprise, and they had YEARS to grow on me.

He was probably referring to the TNG movie series being mired in mediocrity, sometimes downright awfulness. The supposed 'good' one ain't all that either.

I assume your referring to first contact as the good one, i think thats a really good movie so i have to disagree with you on it not being all that. i also like generations, yes the storyline is a little implausible but there were some very memorable moments in it. i have to agree that insurrection and nemesis were rather average so you have a point there, but i still maintain that there should be a tv show to establish the new characters/actors before a movie, star trek always did that in the past so its a bit jarring for them to abandon that and go straight to the movies.

When we have a lot of "shoulds" for others and they don't do it, we're not going to be happy. There is more than one way things "should" be done and I would advise against rigid stances on something we have no control over.

Yeah the TNG movies were pretty bad....insurrection and nemesis being the worst. Generations was alright as well as first contact.

It's telling a different, alternative time line prequel story, where would years of a TV show fit into this?

I wouldn't mind a TV show with this cast. They've grown on me but the thing is...it would be freeping expensive. Most of the cast already had established careers. (an aside...interesting to think that these actors won't have to worry about being typecast.)

i don't see any reason why they couldn't of done that in a tv show format, you could have a unique episode each week in the same style as previous series' but occasionally you'll have an episode in there focused on the main story, not every single episode has to be focused on the main story.

I love these movies. But it is all high dollar make believe. None of it is any more "real" than any other Star Trek.
