Ugh, first blue screen in over ten years because I had a DVD running at the same time as the internet. This OS can handle far less than Vista running at once, 5 weeks and I've had more issues than the last 5 years.

All the more reason I've declined the free offer.

While I have had my issues with 10, I guess I've been lucky and this hasn't been one of them. This evening, I've had Windvd10 (Dvd in this case, but also previously testing with Blu) playing on one half of the screen, Trekbbs on the other half and Calibre in the background updating my library. Avast was probably also doing it's thing at one point. (That being a AMD A8-4500m with 8gb ram though so that may help)

This machine came with 8 and going to 8.1 and then 10 seems to have cured the (apparently power related) crashes it was having. I do have some software that's happy with 7, but doesn't seem to like 10 though.

It always seems connected to running anything video/graphics related. Games, youtube and now DVD.

I did some checking and found a power option bug that causes issues with a lot of graphics in use at once, so I've changed that option under the power plan in Settings.

    We'll see how that goes.

Still sounds like it could be a hardware issue. I had a Samsung laptop that was running 8 and had a shit tonne of issues because of some bad RAM.

I'll wait and see if this was a throttling issue as that's consistent with what's been happening and watching the TaskMan for a while. If it persists I'll maybe have a look inside and make sure everything's in the right place.

Got 10 on my crappy old laptop as a test, it's garbage, kept Windows 7 on everything else.

Well, just up-graded because they gave me a deadline of the 29th so I went ahead. Honestly, cant tell much difference between this and 7

It's not quite as stable as 7, but it is a bit faster, and if you turn off all the unnecessary extras, it becomes resource thrifty, too.

I have to admit after teething troubles I have had fewer problems with 10 then 7, and that was Win 7 64 bit... However I have had a few "kernel power events" where you get crashes due to issues with CPU power. Seems to be a timing issue with the CPU under one of the power management settings and timing pulses, if that makes sense. I had the same issue with Windows 7 till I changed my power settings and disabled all the bits that were supposed to save power as they caused issues more then anything. Did the same thing in Windows 10 and things have been relatively good so far.

So I think I'm gonna go ahead and make the change. Which unnecessary extras and invasive options do I need to make sure to turn off?

I tried it for a few days. The operating system itself worked fine, didn't have any issues to speak of.

I just couldn't stand the GUI itself. Microsoft's insistence on forcing their aesthetics on everyone is mind-boggling. Heck, I don't even understand why they bother giving it its own name in each version of the OS, directly implying that you'll actually have the option to choose others that appeal to your sense of taste. Unless you hack the OS with third party software, you're stuck with it. So why is it treated as a separate thing? I just don't get it at all.

If only they'd open that up, I'd consider upgrading permanently. And would probably continue to adopt each new version as they're released, too. As it stands, I had to revert back to Windows 7. I don't like smartphones or their insipid apps; and I'd rather not have my GUI modeled after their aesthetics, either.

(And no, that's not me bickering about the Windows 8 touch screen stuff. I know you can disable most of that in Windows 10. I'm talking about the actual look and feel of the GUI as a whole; the way the windows look, and all that jazz.)

That's a fair point. When I use Windows 10, I do get the feeling I'm using a phone OS customized for a desktop, rather than a desktop OS designed to use the more powerful capabilities of that platform to its benefit.

I just noticed the people app in windows phone 10 is kind of broken.

the "what's new" page doesn't show any updates on it. Good job MS that used to work before you twits

I won't see Windows 10 on my phone. It was getting Windows 10, Microsoft promised that my model was getting Windows 10, and then suddenly nope, why won't you look at our newer models that will get Windows 10?

Yeah you have to do that manually now.

    1. Go to the store
    2. Download Upgrade Advisor
    3. Run the app
    4. Follow prompts
